    I laid my needs in the courtyard of honor,

    And came to lay my grievances before my Lord.

    قد  جرعتنيَ من كأسِ المراراتِِ

    I complain of sorrows that have come to follow me like a shadow;

    They have made me drink from the cup of bitterness.

    فخففِ  الآنَ  يا ربي عذاباتي

    I spend the night with tears searing my heart in sorrow;

    So ease my torments now, my Lord.

    The sorrows of my lifetime have come to befriend me,

    And today my groans accompany me as well.

    أنقذْ إلهيَ نفسي من ضلالاتي

    Long have I lived in the wilderness of my disobedience;

    My God, rescue my soul from my errors.

    إن زادَ هميَ تحلو لي مُناجاتي

    If my sorrow grows, You come to my aid with forgiveness;

    If my sorrow grows, my intimate prayer becomes sweet to me.

    Who have I but You whenever sorrow keeps me awake?

    Who but You can now heal my wounds?

    Who have I but You, God of the universe, to save me

    From my soul's injustice, from the vast distances?

    Who have I but You, O my Lord, my support,

    After the dearest of all loved ones departed?

    She departed, and joy departed; good fortune left me.

    When she passed away, I lost my noblest friendship.

    ما  كنتُ معْ غيرِها أحكى حكاياتي

    She was the keeper of my secret, always and forever;

    I would tell my stories to no one but her.

    She always prayed to God that He would marry me

    To a princess of beauty—rather, the loveliest of princesses.

    فاليومَ تبكي عليها كلُ أبياتي

    She was delighted by my poetry whenever she heard it;

    Today all my verses weep for her.

    And one day her apparition came to me, after she had departed,

    To tell of the sweetness of gracious gifts.

    She said, 'I love you as much as the universe, my son.'

    Oh, my heart's joy at such pleasing words!

    How often I have wished for sleep that never ends,

    As long as this apparition keeps coming in my dreams.

    She rose to offer the dawn prayer, then departed

    After ablution—oh, the beauty of such endings!

    God loves the deeds of those devoted to purification,

    And God mentions this in some verses.

    And they washed her; her face was smiling.

    Therein is such an outpouring of glad tidings.

    And the bier hastens, signaling her joy:

    Here—carry me forward! How I yearn for what is coming!

    My worldly life was like a prison; death came and freed me.

    So I began running toward the abode of honors.

    فارقتُ  هذا إلى دارِ السعاداتِ

    My worldly life was worry and grief, all of it misery;

    I left this for the abode of joys.

    How different is dwelling beside the Truth, my son,

    From dwelling beside creation in a world of enmities!

    One who is alive with his Creator has not died,

    Yet how many people live like the dead!

    Mother, you spoke truly; I know that truth.

    But this loss of you is the harshest of calamities.

    من  بعدِ فقدِكِ قد فارقتُ راحاتي

    O Mother, the wounds of my heart are bleeding;

    Since losing you, I have parted with my comforts.

    ماتتْ  بموتِكِ يا أمي مسراتي

    You filled my eyes, always and forever;

    With your death, Mother, my joys died.

    When I wished to compose an elegy for you,

    My tears flowed freely, and my words defied me.

    إني  سأملأ ُمن دمعي المحيطاتِ

    If my tears turned to blood, I would pour them out;

    I will fill the oceans with my tears.

    What can I say? My poetry will not obey me.

    If only I had died and not written my elegies!

    For Your protection is my dearest wish.

    So enter among My servants today, content,

    And enter My gardens today, with My good pleasure.

    My Lord said, 'Return!' How sweet His utterance

    Upon the heart! This is the fulfillment of my hopes.
