I have known love since I came to know love for You.

I knew love when I knew your love,

And I closed my heart to whoever opposed You.

And closed my heart to those who opposed you.

وقمت أناجيك يا من ترى

وقمت أناجيك يا من ترى

خفايا القلوب ولسنا نراك

خفايا القلوب ولسنا نراك

And I rose to commune with You, O You who see

And I began whispering to you, O you who sees

The secrets of hearts, though we do not see You.

أحبك حبين حب الهوى

أحبك حبين حب الهوى

وحباً لأنك أهل لذاك

وحباً لأنك أهل لذاك

I love You with two loves: the love of passion,

I love you with two loves - the love of passion

And a love because You are worthy of it.

And love because you are worthy of that.

فأما الذي هو حب الهوى

فأما الذي هو حب الهوى

فشغلي بذكرك عمن سواك

فشغلي بذكرك عمن سواك

As for that which is the love of passion,

As for the love which is the love of passion,

It is my absorption in remembering You, apart from all others.

My occupation with remembering you distracts me from all others.

وأما الذي أنت أهل له

وأما الذي أنت أهل له

فكشفك لي الحجب حتى أراك

فكشفك لي الحجب حتى أراك

And as for that of which You are worthy,

And as for the love for which you are worthy,

It is Your lifting the veils for me until I see You.

You uncovered the veils for me until I saw you.

فلا الحمد في ولا ذاك لي

فلا الحمد في ولا ذاك لي

ولكن لك الحمد فى ذا وذاك

ولكن لك الحمد فى ذا وذاك

So no praise in [this], nor in that, belongs to me;

So neither praise in that nor that is mine,

But Yours is the praise in this and that.

But praise is yours, in this and that.

أشتاق شوقين شوق النوى

أشتاق شوقين شوق النوى

وشوقاً لقرب الخلي من حماك

وشوقاً لقرب الخلي من حماك

I yearn with two longings: the longing of separation,

I yearn with two yearnings - the yearning of passion

And a longing for the untroubled one's nearness to Your sanctuary.

And yearning for the nearness of the beloved to your sanctuary.

فأما الذى هو شوق النوى

فأما الذى هو شوق النوى

فمسيرى الدموع لطول نواك

فمسيرى الدموع لطول نواك

As for that which is the longing of separation,

So as for that which is the yearning of passion,

Then my journey is tears, for the long separation from You.

My streaming tears are for the length of your absence.

وأما اشتياقى لقرب الحمى

وأما اشتياقى لقرب الحمى

فنار حياة خبت في ضياك

فنار حياة خبت في ضياك

And as for my yearning to draw near the sanctuary,

And as for my yearning for the nearness of the beloved,

It is a fire of life that died out in Your radiance.

It is the fire of life that has waned in your absence.

ولست على الشجو أشكو الهوى

ولست على الشجو أشكو الهوى

رضيت بما شئت لى في هداك

رضيت بما شئت لى في هداك

And despite sorrow, I do not complain of love.

And I do not complain of love's anguish,

I am content with what You have willed for me in Your guidance.

I am content with what you have decided for me in your guidance.
