The melody of bitter departure—and the wound,

And love, and poems, and the outpouring,

And wishes, and remembrance of those we love—

From these things we do not awaken.

We doze upon a memory's dewdrops,

Then joy flutters above our heads.

No sooner do we row toward our laughter

    Than salt drives us apart.

Longings do not understand our letters.

Longing is not captivated by exposition.

It has no faith in meter, even if one wrote

Poems and praise for its eyes.

    وإذا تمكّنَ في الحشا رُمْـ حُ

    And longing, at first, is merriment;

And when it takes hold in the heart, it is a spear.

A fragrance that drenches us like a song,

And a waft from its voice melts us.

And a duelist who bore passion as a sword,

No pardon persuades it, nor any truce.

It comes without a promise, shaking our hands,

As though it were erasing our suns.

Even if sores from its injustice touch us,

No wound from our injustice touches it.

The most faithful and generous of our nighttime companions,

The cruelest enemy, whose nature is gracious.

Longing is the nearest laugh that lied,

And the bitterest night betrayed by dawn.

We ache from it, yet do not explain it,

And we feel its ember—yet there is no explanation.

It is a breeze that slays us before dawn,

And doves whose stabs are lamentation.

    في الصدرِ من أمواتِها صَرْحُ

    Longing? This longing is questions;

In the breast stands an edifice of their dead.

The world has not written their answer,

So we remain, neither dozing nor waking.
