وعينُكِand your eye الليلةthe night الممتدّةُlong القـَلِقَةrestless ْ
A night traveler, carrying his sleeplessness in his eyelids.
Your restless eye tonight, long and anxious
And your eye is the long, restless night;
Wanders, and the glance of despair startles me
سافرتُهاI journeyed through it والتفاتُand the turning gaze اليأسِof despair يُفزِعنيfrightens me
فكلماso whenever ذُبتُI melted شوقاًwith longing مَدّstretched ليtoward me عُنُقَهits neck
I journeyed through it, and despair's turning gaze frightens me.
I yearned for you and extended my neck
So whenever I melted with longing, it stretched its neck toward me.
And returned like nomads, no clouds make them laugh
وعُدتُand I returned كالبدْوِlike the Bedouins لاno غيمٌcloud يضاحِكُهُمlaughs with them
كُبودُهمْtheir livers منfrom ظماthe thirst الأسفارِof journeys محترِقةburning ْ
And I returned like the Bedouins, with no cloud to laugh with them,
Their frown from the bitterness of travel burnt
their livers burning from the thirst of journeys.
I protect your heart from a memory that troubles it

I seek protection for your heart from a memory that keeps it sleepless;
I protect it from my longing for the one who created it
I seek protection for it from my longing, through the One who created it.
I protect your eye from a union that troubles it
أٌعيذI seek protection for عينَكِyour eye منfrom وصلٍunion يكدِّرُهاclouds it

إنif مدّدspread البرْدُthe cold فيin أرواحِناour souls قَلَقـَهْits anxiety
I seek protection for your eye from a union that clouds it,
If the cold extends in our souls it worries
if the cold spreads its anxiety through our souls.
Fate sculpted you away from me, though my patience robe - however much I fortified it - was ripped
نَحَتـْكِdrove you away عنيfrom me المقاديرُfate's decrees التيthat كُتِبَتwere written
فحلّةso the robe الصبرِof patience – مهماhowever much جُدتُI gave generously – منخرِقةtorn ْ
The decrees of fate that were written drove you away from me;
In God’s care, O an apparition that laughed at me
so patience's robe—however generous I was—is torn.
So my life was lost in his laughters stolen
فيin ذمةِthe keeping اللهِof God ياO طيفاًan apparition تـَضاحكَsmiled ليfor me
فضاعِso was lost عمريَmy life فيin ضِحكاتِهِits laughter سَرِقـَةstolen away ْ
In God's keeping, O apparition that smiled for me,
Rihana tasked me to fly for her
so my life was lost in its laughter, stolen away.
A soul to inhabit the horizon of love and its horizons
ريحانةa sprig of sweet basil كلـَّفتـْنيcharged me أنto أطيرَI fly لهــاto her

A sprig of sweet basil charged me to fly to her,
The nightingales' flocks come wandering in
as a soul, from love's horizon to dwell in its horizon.
My chest, and get drunk in their soft dreams
تجيءُshe comes تسرَحُroam أسرابُflocks البلابلِof nightingales فيin

صدريْmy breast, وتسْكَرُand grow drunk فيin أحلامِهاtheir dreams النزِقةunruly ْ
She comes; flocks of nightingales roam in
She disappears, settles in the bossom of her beloved
my breast, and grow drunk in their unruly dreams.
If a lover pulled her, who adored her, to love
تغيبُshe vanishes تَسْكُنُdwells فيin الموّالِthe folk song بَسْمَتُهاher smile
إنْif جرّهُdraws it out عاشِقٌa lover أضناهُwore him down مَنthe one عَشِقهْhe loved them
She vanishes; her smile dwells in the mawwal,
I cry for the sweet youth on a branch, a Tamees, that
if a lover, worn down by the one he loved, draws it out.
No leaf remains on it for the eye of the loved one
أبكِيْI mourn الصِّباyouth الحُلوَsweet فيin غصْنِa bough تَميسُshe sways بهِwith it

I mourn sweet youth in a bough with which she sways;
All that was...that death took us by surprise
to the lovesick lover's eye, not one leaf of it remained.
And fate extinguished between us its paths
كلall الذيthat كانَhappened..أنthat الموتَdeath باغَتـَناtook us by surprise

وأطفأَand extinguished الحظُّfortune فيماin what بينَناbetween us طُرُقـَهْits paths
All that happened was that death took us by surprise,
All that was...that estrangement woke up
and fortune extinguished its paths between us.
And the night scattered on our eyelids its darkness
كلall الذيthat كانhappened..
والليلُand night ذَرَscattered علىupon أجفانِناour eyelids غسَقـَهْits dusk
All that happened was that estrangement awoke,
And old age overtook my poems so it disabled me
and night scattered its dusk upon our eyelids.

In God’s care, O you whom I came searching for
a text that speaks to me of a radiant image.
My soul but found it in a thin cloud

In God's keeping, O you—I came searching for
She passed - may God rest her soul - to God and started
myself, and chanced upon her in a rain-laden cloud.

She departed—God keep her—toward God, and there began
Oh winter, whenever forgetfulness warmed me
poems of longing that arouse compassion.
He surrendered his arms to forgetfulness and embraced it

Ah, winter! Whenever forgetfulness warmed me,
In God’s care, O a soul I rose with
it lowered its arms toward forgetfulness and embraced it.

In God's keeping, O soul through whom I soared,
In God's care, O a whole world that lives with me
and the first name my heart uttered in love.

In God's keeping, O universe that lives with me,
while people take it for a line on a sheet of paper.
