Then Achilles, with a straightened spear,

set it down, and set down an ornate cauldron,

    adorned with images of flowers,

never yet raised above the fire,

as a prize for the skilled spear-thrower,

    in casting spears from afar.

    Then tall Agamemnon rose,

and likewise Meriones stepped forward, standing upright.

Then Achilles cried: “Is there anyone among us

who does not know, O Atreides, how far you have surpassed the chiefs,

and how you have been the strongest in spear-casting and strength?

So the prize is rightfully made ready for you.

Take it to your ship without demur.

And if you wish what I wish in this matter,

then let us reward Meriones with this spear.” And indeed

Atreides expressed his approval of that to him.

He bestowed the spear on Meriones, then went on,

then took up the precious prize,

passing it to the herald Talthybius.
