    Then Achilles rose to speak,

Stepping forward for the third of the games,

Showing the champions the wrestling prizes,

Urging the fearful to brave its terrors.

For the winning wrestler, a gleaming cauldron,

    Its worth twelve head of cattle;

And for the defeated, a frightened maiden,

    Her value not exceeding four.

And he cried: “Champions, whoever among you wishes

To enter this arena, let him rise at once.”

Then Ajax the Greater rose first,

Then Odysseus, the leader and strategist.

They girded themselves and came forth unarmed,

And met and grappled, hand to hand.

They clung together like two beams,

Set upright in the roof by the builder,

Firmly fixed by the builder’s skill,

To withstand the force of rain and storms.

Until the joints of their ribs almost broke,

And sweat streamed like pouring rain [reading uncertain],

And red stains of blood ran

Over their flanks and the vertebrae of their backs.

And each was ablaze with the fire of hope

Of winning victory and that cauldron.

So neither did Odysseus prevail over Ajax,

Nor did Ajax achieve his aim against him.

So all the spectators grew impatient,

    And then Telamon’s son cried:

“Odysseus, this has gone on long; lift me here,

    And if you wish, I shall lift you now;

And the rest of the toil is entrusted to Zeus.”

Then Ajax lifted him [“upon the light” is unclear in the source],

But the other was not about to forget his tricks.

    Swiftly he struck Ajax on the leg;

His knee buckled, then he toppled over,

And Odysseus fell upon his chest.

And the crowd marveled at what he had done.

Then Odysseus tried to lift him,

But he could not budge him,

Until he bent his knee, and the two champions

    Both fell, covered in dust.

A third time they meant to clash,

    But Achilles settled the matter:

    “Enough wrestling, and enough harm!

    فلكما الجزاء بالسويه

    Both of you have shown your fighting spirit;

So the reward is yours in equal shares.

Stop, both of you, [unclear word], so the rest may come forward.”

So they listened and obeyed his command,

And separated and abandoned the wrestling.

And they shook off the dust, then dressed,

Each in his cloak, and went off and sat down.
