So they prayed, while Hector, drawing lots among them,

Shook the lots, turning his gaze aside.

Paris's lot appeared before them first,

So he would be the first to strike with his spear.

They sat, their arms beside their army,

And the horses stood along its flanks.

Priam's son prepared his armor, and on

His legs he secured his footwear with its fastenings.

With silver loops he fastened it, and took the breastplate

Of his brother Lycaon in place of his own armor.

And girded on the polished sword, inlaid

With silver studs along its sides.

He added his shield and his helmet, whose

    Plumes floated over its rings.

    بِقُوى المَعَاصِمِ دَارَ في راحاتِهِ

    And whirled in his right hand the mightiest spear;

With the strength of his wrists it spun in his palms.

Menelaus arrived, fully clad in arms,

And both donned armor, each for his battle.

Then both advanced, and each duelist's glances

Revealed his choking bitterness through blazing wrath.

They stood where they had marked the lines, and each

Made his foes' hearts quail with his spear.

Priam's son hurled the straightened spear, and it bent

    Against Atreides' shield, glancing away.

At once Menelaus countered him, unleashing

His volleys, accompanied by his prayer:

“O Zeus, take my hand, that I may find relief from a man

Who defiles my honor with his outrages.

Crush him utterly in my hand, that he may be a warning

To an evil guest who spurned his hosts' kindness.”

He hurled his spear, which drove through, piercing

The shield's face and the belly of his ample mail,

Until it passed right through his outer garment.

But he twisted his shoulders, securing his escape.

Then Atreides drew his polished sword

Above the helmet, certain of his opponent's death.

But the keen blade shattered in his right hand,

And sent its shards flying above his brow.

Turning aside, he gestured toward the sky, addressing

Zeus, reproaching him for his setbacks:

“Among all the immortal kin, none has been like you,

O Zeus, so unjust in his decrees.

I nearly slew that brother of debauchery in triumph,

When behold, my keen sword flew apart in fragments!

And behold, I thrust with my spear, yet did not

Reach him with my spear and its thrusts.”

He lunged, dragging him by his helmet, and with

Violence backed away, hastening his steps.

And dragged him, while the strap held his chin,

So his breath caught at the back of his throat.

He would have overpowered him, had not

Cypris hastened to cut his straps in secret.

    فَرَمى بها فَتَدَحرَجَت لِسراتهِ

    So the helmet, its straps cut, was left with him;

He threw it, and it rolled toward his chieftains.

    فَرَخمى بها فَتَدَحرَجَت لِسَراتهِ

    So the helmet, its straps cut, was left with him;

He threw it, and it rolled toward his chieftains.

His companions had it to themselves, while he turned back

To his lunges with his sharpened javelin.

But Aphrodite, mighty as she was,

At once bound together the cords of his life.

She hid him in piled-up mist, lodging

Him amid perfumes in his chambers.

And went to Helen—and there she was,

Seated in the tower upon its battlements.

While the girls gazed, she drew near to her,

In a maidservant's guise, with all its flaws.

She mimicked a favored old woman from her people,

Who wove wool into its tightly worked fabrics.

And tugged her by her fragrant robe, and

Cried to her: “Paris, in his private retreat,

Calls you; you see him in a chamber

That embraced you both; so wondrously fair is his form,

That you would imagine he had not been in

A battle where he faced his fiercest foes,

But was at a dancing-place, ready

To dance, or had returned from its dancing grounds.”
