So he finished his speech, and all the company

In gloomy silence found his stubbornness bitter.

    Then Phoenix, with tears streaming,

As the calamity deepened, spoke insistently:

If, out of anger and fierce resentment,

You shrink from facing the enemy's army,

And seek to return, my cherished son,

How can I bear your absence?

You were sent to war with me when

Peleus first wished you to go to Atreides,

That through my care I might raise you to deeds,

And make you an eloquent speaker of upright words.

Still young, you were unversed in the clash of spears,

Where the brave display their courage,

And likewise unversed in the deliberations of

Our council, where a man of judgment rises in honor.

No, I will not remain far from you,

Even if a god granted me renewed youth

And erased my gray hair, restoring me to the day

When I sailed from Hellas under compulsion,

The day when, through the furious anger of Amyntor,

Son of Ormenus, my father and ruler,

I came fleeing, after approaching a

Maid he wickedly desired, to spite my mother.

So my mother urged me toward her, so that

She might utterly loathe the old man upon seeing me.

She fell humbly upon my knees,

And I obeyed desire and answered her command.

My father learned of me and turned to curses,

Calling on the daughters of death, and said:

Never shall a boy sit upon his knees

Who is born of him—and he pronounced a solemn vow.

Zeus of the underworld answered his prayer,

And Persephone, the terror of every mighty being.

My anger drove me; I almost confronted

Him with a sword to cleave belly and back.

But one of the immortals set about

Quenching the anger in my iron-hard heart,

Lest it be said among my people:

That man arrogantly slew his father.

Yet I disdained to remain long

Within a palace where my father raged.

    But friends and family tried,

With entreaties, to keep me from leaving the palace.

They slaughtered fat calves for roasting,

And piglets in Vulcan's blazing fire,

And lambs, and poured the old man's wine

From his pitchers, settling in contentedly.

    إن يَنَم واحدٌ فَآخَرُ يَسعَى

    They stayed around me for nine nights;

If one slept, another kept watch.

By my chamber door and by the door

Of the house, they never quenched the embers all night.

    But on the tenth day,

When deep night had spread its darkness,

Making for my chamber's doors, I

Rose; they were barred, and I broke them apart.

At once I passed through the house door,

    Hidden from searching eyes,

And sought escape across the land of

    Hellas, running steadily toward Phthia.

There I met the kindly king Peleus,

And stayed with him as an honored guest.

He loved me as a man of abundant wealth loves

A firstborn begotten in extreme old age.

He granted me wealth and many subjects,

And I became prince of the Dolopians.

From then, you know, my love for you grew boundless,

And through my efforts you attained your present stature.

You would accept no food but mine,

Sitting on my knee and before me.

I carefully cut the meat and fed

You with this very hand, and gave you wine.

How often you spat wine from your mouth,

    And playfully soaked my clothes!

How often I exhausted myself in distress,

And suffered distress through my labor!

I knew that the powers of guidance

Had denied me the joy of children.

So I sought in you a son, Achilles, so that

You might ward off disgrace should it befall me, and defend me.

Restrain your anger; do not choose to keep your hatred.

Even the gods themselves yield to gentleness,

Though theirs are the highest virtues and

Glory, and strength of arm; gentleness is more fitting.

If a humble man stands before them in supplication,

    Sacrifices, vows, and wine intercede.

    بلاّءِ تَعدُو ورِفقَهُ تَتَحَرَّى

    Indeed, the Prayers are Zeus's daughters;

They hasten past calamity, seeking his mercy.

They are lame, wrinkled of face, and dim-sighted,

    Following Error whenever she appears.

But Error has the lead, since

Her strides are stronger and swifter.

    يَتَتَبَّعنَها فَيَشفينَ حالا

    She races across the earth, casting down calamity;

They follow her and heal at once.

Whoever, when they come to him,

Shows respect, they protect from harm.

But woe to whoever turns them away!

They return to Zeus, seeking his aid,

Asking him for Error to rain down

A bitterer calamity upon that defiant man.

    يَتَّقِيهِنَّ كُلُّ قَرمٍ تَسامى

    So honor them reverently, Achilles;

    Every eminent champion reveres them.

    Indeed, if Atreides had not

    Offered splendid gifts to treasure,

Or neglected to mention what he would give

Hereafter, or persisted in fiercer hatred,

I would not ask you to help the people, however

Cruelly calamity's blow fell upon them.

But now he has given, and will yet give,

Sending those you love to deliver his message.

The finest leaders have come to you; yield,

And now take a lesson from my account.

We have heard of the heroes of old,

    When wrath tormented men's hearts,

That amid the receipt of splendid gifts

And entreaties, they would relent humbly.

    هاكَمُوهُ كَما جَرى وأَلَمَّا

    An ancient event remains in my memory;

Here it is for you, as it happened and befell.

It was when the Curetes rose against the

Aetolians, and war's impact burned fierce.

Beneath the walls of Calydon they met,

Those assembled hosts, and gave free rein to strife.

    وَتَرامَى الإيتُولُ يخشَونَ غَدرا

    The Curetes charged forward, seeking conquest;

The Aetolians charged forward, fearing treachery.

Artemis had stirred up that calamity,

Angered at Oeneus, and war arose,

Because he failed to offer her the

First fruits of his crops, neglecting due reverence.

When he brought the hundreds of sacrificial victims,

He burned them for all the gods except her.

Whether from forgetfulness or deliberate disregard,

That deed of his was nonetheless a sin.

In anger she sent forth a wild boar

Against his lands, where it ravaged in arrogance,

    Ruthlessly uprooting root and branch,

    Destroying trees, boughs and blossoms.

    Oeneus's son Meleager confronted it,

And killed it, after assembling his champions,

A band of archers from neighboring lands,

With dogs to terrify the beast.

It was terrifying; it was no easy task

To fend it off with scant, light weaponry.

    واستَتَبَّ الشِّقاقُ مِن ثمَّ جَهرا

    They killed it after it had killed many;

    Then strife openly took hold,

As they disputed, seeking its head and hide.

That was what Artemis sought in hatred.

So long as Meleager struck at them,

The Aetolians gained triumph and victory.

    Though the enemies outnumbered them,

They could not reach the wall's edge.

But wrath, which plays havoc with the

    Sensible, maliciously inflamed his heart.

He was stirred to aversion and fury

By Althaea, his mother, and shunned the fighting.

    And with the beautiful Cleopatra,

His wife, he secluded himself and shunned the charge.

    مِن بَنَاتِ المَهِيبِ إِيفِينُوسا

    Her mother was highborn Marpessa,

    One of the daughters of formidable Evenus;

Her father, Idas, was the greatest champion

In all the earth in those days.

He even charged against Apollo when

Apollo sought Marpessa, driving an arrow into him.

Her parents therefore gave her the name

Alcyone, for an event that was bitter:

    When Phoebus had sought Marpessa,

Just as he had earlier carried off Alcyone,

She wept, burning with deep misery,

And named her daughter thus in remembrance.

    Meleager then remained enraged

Beside her, warming himself at the fire of his anger,

Ever since Althaea, for her brother's killing,

Had heaped curses, abuse, and rebukes upon him.

She struck the earth fiercely with both hands,

Then knelt and prayed in anger,

    Calling upon Hades and Persephone

To make her son taste a most evil death.

To Erinys in the depths of darkness,

In Erebus, the echo of her prayers reached.

Then the enemy shattered the fortifications, and at the

Gates the tumult roared with stabbing and slaughter.

So the elders of the land, to Meleager,

Sent priests to seek his aid.

They promised him fifty feddans of farmland,

Wherever he chose, and a splendid vineyard.

His father Oeneus, the venerable old man,

Knelt at his door and begged him,

As did his sisters, Althaea herself, and friends

And family, while he grew ever more averse.

    خُرِقَ السُّورُ ثُمَّةَ النَّارُ شَبَّت

    He persisted until war flared at his door;

The wall was breached, and then fire blazed.

Then his wife appeared before him,

Graceful, seeking his kindness and pleading for pardon.

She showed him how much misery befalls

A town subdued by the heat of battle:

Its buildings burned and its people slaughtered,

Its women and children humbled and enslaved.

    شَكَّ وَاشتَدَّ والعِدى صَدَّ صَدَّا

    He softened and returned to aid his comrades;

He armed himself, fought fiercely, and repelled the enemy.

For this he did not receive the splendid gifts,

Though he had inflicted defeat upon his enemies.

Friend, rise; do not be stubborn like him,

Though he had inflicted defeat upon his enemies.

Accept the gifts and march with us; they will

All exalt you to the rank of a gracious god.

But if you come of your own accord, gladly,
