She went away, her heart choked with grief at her defeat,

Now caught between turmoil and burning anguish.

Her radiant body bled, nearly clothed

In a robe of black by mounting wrath and anguish.

Then there sped to meet her, racing the wind in flight,

Iris, drawing her away from where swords struck.

There was Ares on the army's left, concealed,

With his spear and horses, by banks of cloud.

She bent over his knees, urgently seeking

His horses, bridled with pure gold.

She said, “Dear brother, lend them to me to carry me

To the haven of the immortals; this wound has tortured me.

A mortal's son, a shameless man, inflicted it on me,

Who shrinks in fear before none, not even Zeus, my father.”

He said, “Here are my horses and my chariot.”

She took her seat in it, her heart faint and sorrowful.

And Iris, the horses' reins in her hand,

Drove them, swifter than the gleam of meteors,

Until she rose to Olympus' lofty summits.

Then she halted them and freed them from the saddle-gear.

She hastened to give them immortal food; and off went

Cypris to her mother, bending at her knees.

She welcomed her and clasped her to her heart—

Dione, asking in wonder what had happened:

“What god, as though you had done wrong,

Has wronged you so? What fool has brought you to this?”

She said, “It was no god, but a mighty mortal—

That son of Tydeus, who draws down showers of calamity.

Because I sought to save Aeneas,

My dearest kin among the people of earth.

For the Danaans were not content with the Trojans,

But turned against us with white blades and fiery bolts.”

Dione said, “Patience! Many examples have we

Of mortals afflicting the immortals with suffering.

Ares is your example, despite the awe he inspires:

A year and a month he lay in prison, feared by none.

Otus, son of Aloeus, cast him there, and likewise

His brother Ephialtes, with fetters and warfare.

They bound him in iron chains; nor

Did mounting fury or clamor avail him.

He nearly perished, had not his plight been revealed

By Eriboea; Hermes then rescued him under cover.

And Hera—the son of Amphitryon caused her pain

With a cruel arrow lodged high in her breast.

Even Hades himself was wounded by that mighty champion,

Deliberately; he recoiled on his heels in anguish.

He sought the palace of Zeus, father of the gods, stricken

With misery, an arrow fixed in his shoulder-bone.

Paeon sprinkled his balm to heal him,

Since he was immortal through ages and epochs.

Woe to the sons of men, if they attack

The children of immortality out of folly and anger!

Pallas set Diomedes upon you, but he did not

Know what fate his handiwork would bring.

He did not know that whoever has wrought against the gods

Evil with his hands will not return to his homeland.

Nor will he be joyfully greeted from upon his knee

By a child saying gently, ‘Father, answer me!’

Let him fear a valiant warrior's blow, greater in strength

And fury than you, whom he invites with his challenge.

And let him think of Aegialia, his wife,

Endowed with beauty, wisdom, and noble birth,

Drowsy, her dream disturbing and troubling her,

Till she awakens, her heart frightened and trembling.

Then, in anguish, she wakes her maidservants,

And they sob, with tears overflowing and streaming.”

She cleansed the wound with both her hands, and eased

Her pains; the burden of suffering subsided.

But when Athena and Hera deliberately sought

To anger Zeus for a purpose within their hearts,

Athena said, “Father, may I, without displeasing you,

Tell you what caused this wound?

No doubt Cypris meant to draw a beautiful woman

To the passion of a wealthy Trojan lover.

    فَمَزَّقَتها فَرامَت نِحلَة الكذِبِ

    Her palm became caught in loops of pure gold;

They tore it, and she turned to a fabricated tale.”

He listened, smiling, and summoned the wounded goddess

Gently, saying, “My heart's desire, bear it patiently.

Leave wars to Ares and Athena, and do not

Concern yourself with anything but sweet love and delight.”
