O you unrivaled in glory and in greatness,

O gatherer of clouds, you who rise high in heaven,

let not the sun be veiled, nor darkness follow it,

until we achieve our hope of victory over Priam:

I raze the lofty palace he built, and see the

    blaze devouring the doors and carrying them off;

and I tear apart the armor of mighty Hector

upon his breast; and we make the people taste the worst affliction.

And around him young men plunge and fall,

then bite the dust—men of his noble company.

    آوى الضَّحِيَّةَ لَكن أَثقلَ العَمَلا

    But the son of Cronus did not fulfill that hope;

he accepted the sacrifice, but made the toil heavier.

Rather, he added misery to their ordeal, and they knew it not.

They prayed and scattered barley that bore kisses aloft.

And the sacrificer raised the victim's head, and then,

after flaying it, set its thighs apart.

He covered their edges with fat, and laid over them the

[entrails], bloodied and dripping down from above.

And they kindled the fire with chopped logs,

its blaze flaring around the spits of entrails.

When at last the thighs had melted and they had taken

the remaining entrails as their portion, they divided the meat left over.

Then they roasted it and set to the meal, and not

one among them could complain of receiving no share.

When they had eaten their fill, venerable Nestor rose to his

feet, standing upright, and spoke extemporaneously:

Atreides, lord of lords, then let us rise to

a deed the Lord, who has acted, entrusts to us.

Let the heralds of war cry out, gathering

    the heroes of battle swiftly beside the ships;

and let us all run toward their host,

rousing the war-god's strife and exultation.
