O king, weighed down with the intoxication of wine!

O you with dogs' eyes, O you with a stag's heart!

You were never equal to braving death

among the Greeks when the dust of battle rises.

    كلُّ هذا يُرِيكَ مَوتاً مُعَجَّل

    You never led their proud chiefs into an ambush;

all this looks to you like an early death.

It is better, you know, to reclaim the

share from whoever opposes your word if it goes astray.

You have preyed unjustly upon this people,

since you were the favored one among base men.

Were it not for this, O Atreides, you would at this

hour meet final disgrace and be forsaken.

For you, from me, a prophecy and an oath,

given weight by this revered scepter:

a hooked staff on which leaves shall never flourish, since

it was severed from its trunk upon the lofty peaks.

How could it flourish, when the keen-edged blade has stripped

it bare? And never after that could it grow green again.

Indeed, by this scepter, which is guardian

entrusted to their hands; they are guardians

of Zeus's law, which descended among them.

Such is my oath, a mighty oath to you:

a ravaged army will weep for Achilles

when Hector strikes violently in its midst,

and you seek to defend it, only to fail.

So your soul will burn within you, furious

with you, since you plotted against the finest and bravest of gallant men.
