Nestor sat beside his cup of wine,

    Listening to uproar and clamor.

Then to Machaon he said: I wonder what

May come from the clash of weapons.

    نَقعُهم يَعلومَهٍ لا تَبرَحا

    Around those ships the warriors shout;

Their dust rises. Stay; do not depart.

    Drink the wine unmixed, while

Hecamede warms the basin for you

And cleanses your wound of this bloody stain.

I shall go and see what has happened

Among the warriors. He took a larger shield

    Which Thrasymedes had left behind,

    Preferring his father Nestor's shield.

    He grasped a long spear

With a cutting point that gleamed in bronze.

Great disaster had befallen the Greeks.

    خَلفَهُم مِن خَلفِهِ السورُ صُدِع

    They were driven back before an advancing enemy;

Behind them, behind that enemy, the wall was breached.

The old man stood absorbed in thought,

His spirit still, like a broad sea

Whose waters sense a storm approaching in the air

    And turn dark and lowering.

Its waves do not surge, inclining

In any direction, before Zeus commands

His wind to swoop upon the billows.

So the old man's mind stirred between two choices:

To reach the army beyond the flying spray,

    Joining Agamemnon, or

The flanks, where the champions clashed.

    He finally chose the latter.

    يَقرَعُ الجُنّاتِ في دُرّاعِهِم

    The clash of brown spears felled noble warriors;

Against the shields of armored men struck

A keen short sword and a polished spear,

Sharp on both edges, its point drenched.

Then at the shore the wounded princes,

Sons of Zeus, appeared in groups,

    Like Diomedes, Odysseus, and At-

reides, coming from their ships toward the warriors.

Their ships, far from the place of deadly thrusts,

Had been moored a great distance along the shore.

    دونَهُنَّ السُورُ بِالإِحكامِ شيد

    Before them, ships lay nearer the plain;

Before those, the wall had been firmly built

As a stronghold against determined pursuit.

    That broad, spacious shore

Could not contain all those ships,

For fear of narrowing the space that lay

Before them, where the companies assembled.

    So they stood in rows within that gulf;

Among them the hearts of the chiefs surged.

They came forward, each upon his spear

    Leaning, watching the roaring tumult.

And there was the old man, heeded Nestor.

    وَأَغا مَمنونُ نادى يَئِسا

    All burned with grief at seeing him;

    Agamemnon called out despairingly:

Son of Neleus, exemplar of the Greeks, why

Have you returned cautiously from the clash of spears?

My fear, alas, is the fulfillment of the threat

    Of that murderous, stubborn Hector,

Who swore in his council that

He would burn the sails and destroy the people

Before resolving to return to Ilium.

    O Lord, today he has fulfilled his promise;

The army's heart blazes with anger.

Like Achilles, all reproach me, and

Have blamed me and refused to avert the harm.

He said: The matter is settled; not even

Zeus himself can avert this calamity.

    That wall was our protection;

You see it demolished, with dust rising.

The battlefield now lies beside the fleet.

Cast your gaze in every direction:

Do you not see where great destruction strikes us?

    وَهديدُ القَومِ في الجَوِّ قَصَف

    Wherever you look, the slain have fallen;

The people's thunderous cries crash through the air.

Let us seek a counsel that brings deliverance,

If counsel can still serve at this moment.

    ما عَلى المَجروحِ إِتيانُ الكِفاح

    Wisdom lies in our withdrawal;

The wounded need not enter the struggle.

    Agamemnon answered in anguish:

    If that imposing wall

Has not averted harm, nor the ditch repelled it,

Or our hopes in it have failed

After exhausting the strength of our great army,

Or battle has arisen before the ships,

This degrading humiliation comes from Zeus.

I witnessed his help before, just as

Today I have witnessed this manifest abandonment,

Certain of death in a foreign land.

He has bound our hands, and to our mighty foes

Granted the immortals' honor and distinction.

Let us drag out those ships of the fleet

    That lie nearest the shore,

And anchor them in the sea's heart until

We see the host of darkness approach.

Then, when it halts the enemy's assaults,

We shall hastily draw out the remaining ships

And escape the evil of shameful torment.

A man's flight is always preferable

To the punishment of captivity in enemy hands.

It is no disgrace, no, even at night,

For a man to hide from an emerging calamity.

    Odysseus spoke, blazing with anger:

You fellow of folly, what is this faintheartedness?

You are better suited to commanding cowards, not

Commanding the fearless among all champions,

Whose elders strike like vigorous youths.

Zeus taught us to draw our swords

In childhood, until the day of death.

Would you make us retreat, while you see

Our dead in their thousands around Ilium?

Stop! Let none but us among the companies hear

Such words of weakness, never uttered

By a discerning man, a king, or

A commander like you, rushing into war,

His vast army the choicest of the choice.

Shall we drive the ships into the sea

While battle raises its clamor to the sky?

    That is precisely the enemies' desire;

And if they prevail through victory,

    When we begin this undertaking,

What will avert the horrors of failure?

And when the soldiers, from behind them,

See us, they will be terribly afraid

And turn away. No, no, this is not right.

Atreides said: You have addressed me

With words that have wounded me.

I shall not forcibly compel our soldiers

    To launch the anchored ships.

Let any of you rise, no matter whether

He is young or an aged elder,

    أَتَلَقّاهُ بِقَلبِ مُطمَئِن

    And bring us sound advice;

I shall receive it with a tranquil heart.

Then Diomedes came forward to speak:

Look here: here is the man you seek.

Hear him, if you desire sound counsel.

    Let not a young man's advice anger you;

His ancestral excellence rises proudly through him.

My father is noble, steadfast Tydeus,

Whose lofty tomb stands in Thebes.

    His grandfather Portheus, in Pleuron

    وَبِها مَغناهُ بِالإِعزازِ طاب

    And Calydon, held extensive rule;

There his dwelling flourished in honor.

His sons were Agrius, then Melas,

And Oeneus, finest in resolve and valor.

    وَأَبي أَرغوسَ مُذ أُجليَ داس

    That grandfather of mine remained in his homeland;

My father trod Argos after his exile.

It was a fate from Zeus and the gods,

    To which Tydeus unwillingly submitted.

Then, in his exile, he completed

His marriage bond with Adrastus's daughter

And dwelt in a house of splendid courts.

He owned the countryside and acquired fields,

Fertile lands where his livestock wandered.

    In wielding the spear, none matched him;

No one—and you know I speak the truth.

Thus I am no insignificant offshoot,

Nor timid and abject in war.

Therefore do not scorn my words if

I say: Let us find our way to battle,

    Though our blood continues streaming.

    Necessities possess great authority.

Only let us stand apart from the place of thrusts,

    Withdrawing where we cannot suffer

In battle a painful wound upon our wounds.

We shall urge the troops and summon to assistance

Those whom self-indulgence has seated in cowardice.

    وَجَرَوا وَالقَلبُ بِالحَزمِ اِتقَد

    They listened and understood until he finished;

They went, their hearts aflame with resolution,

    إِنَّما فوسيذُ عَن قُربٍ رَقَب

    Behind Atreides, with fearless hearts.

    Poseidon watched from nearby;

He assumed a venerable elder's likeness and approached.

    He came to Agamemnon, grasping

His right hand with formidable indignation.

    He said: Atreides, resentful Achilles

Rejoices at the slaughter of your valiant troops.

Let him die and utterly perish in

His error! Know that the immortals

Have not imposed on you hatred that breeds discord.

Soon dust will darken the plain

    From the Trojans seeking flight.

Then he rushed away from them with

A crash swelling like thunder, and went on.

He shouted a resounding cry from an iron breast,

Greater than the shout of nine thousand,

Indeed, the shout of ten thousand when

Iron-armored men clash on the day of thrusts.

The Greeks flamed with ardor for battle.

From Olympus's heights, from her golden throne,

Hera rose, looking toward the blaze.

    She saw her brother advancing,

And her fortunate heart soared in joy.

Toward Ida she turned her gazelle-like eyes

And saw Zeus, who had pained her,

    Sitting proudly upon his summit.

    She pondered a troubling scheme,

Perhaps to soothe him through something wondrous.

After applying her thought, she resolved

To prepare her adornment for him.

Then, if he came to her enchanted

    By her radiance, she would execute her stratagem;

And upon his eyes, if she found a way,

Pour the spirit of prolonged slumber.

Then she sought the chamber built for her

By her craftsman son, noble Hephaestus.

Its door was never opened to another.

    Above lofty structures rose its door-bars;

Its bolt was visible to her alone.

She locked it upon entering, then secluded herself

With perfumes whose fragrance was their glowing breath.

She cleansed her limbs with ambergris,

    Then with exalted, fragrant oil,

A perfume which, whenever a hand touched it,

    Wafted from mighty Zeus's dwelling,

Fragrant across earth, rising to the clouds.

Then she braided her shining tresses

With her hands, after combing her hair.

She arranged them in coils, their fringe

    Winding enchantingly above her head.

She put on a fine, flowing robe,

    Athena's work, with elegant embroidery.

She fastened its golden clasps, then turned

To a girdle embracing her graceful figure,

    Its hundred tassels splendidly bound.

Then two earrings, charming in their beauty,

She gently hung from both ears.

    Each earring, with three

Little gems, was beautifully made, delighting the eyes.

A radiant veil of beauty lay upon

Her head, like the sun over open wilderness.

Then she secured a gleaming sandal on

Each foot, both blazing with her radiance.

She stepped forth from the veil's concealment.

    Then she called Aphrodite into

Seclusion from all the gods above,

And said to her: Will you listen, then,

Or, daughter, will you make me fail,

Angry with me for favoring the Achaeans,

Since you have bestowed allegiance on the Trojans?

She answered: Every thing you seek

Shall be accomplished willingly and gladly,

If possible, or among things that can be granted.

    The goddess spoke, having already

Hidden her stratagem: Come, then, lend your aid:

The flame of desire and the love that

Burns in the hearts of gods and mortals.

I have resolved to travel to earth's farthest reaches,

To visit the parents of the divine company,

    Oceanus and Tethys, who

Raised me in the tender hands of indulgence.

Perhaps I can mend their broken bonds.

Long has discord endured in their estrangement,

And affection been cast off in their resentment.

Since Rhea once entrusted me to them,

They cared for me with all their strength,

    When mighty Zeus bound Cronus

Beneath the earth and the barren sea.

If with gentleness I pillow them upon

Love's cushions, great credit shall be mine,

And the heights of favor and honored standing.

    She answered her cheerfully, smiling:

Would one like me refuse this desire?

How could I, goddess for whom Zeus

Spread both arms, enchanted and lovestruck?

Then she unfastened from her breast the girdle,

Distinctively embroidered, richly patterned in harmony.

    Within its folds cling pleasures:

Desire of the soul, passion, and longing,

And the delights of pleasing conversation.

It holds every enchantment of feeling,

Speech that beguiles even the prudent elder.

She placed it in the goddess's hand and

Said, smiling with plainly shining joy:

    كُلُّ حِرزٍ رُمتِ فيهِ رُسِما

    Take now this embroidered girdle;

Every charm you seek is wrought within it.

Conceal it upon your breast, for

It has appeared to me in the unseen that

Success is ordained for you before your return.

    Hera smiled at it, delighted,

Then clasped it to her; as for Aphrodite,

She turned back toward her dwelling.

    Then Hera set off descending,

Flying like lightning from Olympus's heights

    Toward Ephyria, over verdant meadows,

Then Emathia, then the mountains of Thr-

ace, whose fierce horsemen make their raids.

They were clothed in snow veiled by mist.

She traversed that whole expanse without

Touching earth with her radiant foot.

She sped from lofty Athos toward

Where the sea's waters clashed in waves.

After traveling across the lands she reached

    Lemnos, where excellent Thoas ruled.

There she halted, full of gladness, when

She met Sleep, the brother of Death.

She greeted him with sweet words:

Guardian of gods and mortals, you who

Granted me favor in times past,

Add now another kindness to it,

Bestowing favors treasured for all time.

Pour slumber for me into Zeus's eyes

If he lies with me in love's passion.

And you have my pledge, if you answer me:

A gift surpassing all splendid gifts,

A faultless throne of purest gold.

Into it will pour craftsmanship and skill

    My lame son, wise Hephaestus.

Beside it shall be a footstool you can place

Under your feet at feasting time.

He said: Gently! Sleep's powers were his.

    Any god you wish, I can overcome;

And the streams of Oceanus, from whom

All things came, and to whom they return,

Forever yield to me without doubt.

But I shall not give Zeus sleep

    Ever, unless he commands it.

You taught me wisdom before, when

My spell dulled his watchful gaze,

The day Heracles swept through Ilium

And sailed away from it rejoicing.

Through me you distracted Zeus to bring

A grievous calamity upon his mighty son.

Then you stirred things up to bring

A grievous calamity upon his mighty son.

Then you violently stirred the sea into turmoil.

    Heracles, amid suffering and distress,

Reached Cos, seeing no friend there.

Against the gods blazed the anger

Of Zeus, when he rose among them, awakening.

He battered them mightily, and above all

Terrible wrath drove him to seek me.

He almost hurled me from the sky into

The sea's abyss, down to its depths, stricken.

    But darkness intervened with concealment.

I took refuge in her, where Night dwelt,

Feared by every god and mortal.

    Zeus reconsidered in his fury,

    Respected her sanctity, then forgave.

After that experience, do you seek the impossible?

She answered with charm and majesty:

Do you suppose his anger will blaze so?

Do you imagine the Trojan army is to Zeus

Like his son, brought near by kinship's privilege?

Come, rise! I shall give you a wife to embrace,

For delight, one of the radiant maidens:

    Fortunate Pasithea, whom so often

You have passionately desired, evening and morning.

He said, trembling with joy: Swear

To me by mighty, dreadful Styx,

And set your hands, one upon the earth,

Then one upon the dark sea.

Let fearsome gods witness the oaths

That you will prepare for me a wife to embrace,

For delight, one of the beautiful maidens,

    And grant me Pasithea, whom

    I desire evening and morning.

Swearing the great oath, she called as witnesses

    Cronus's company, the gods below,

All the Titans and those whose

    Company dwells in Tartarus's depths,

That she had given him no false promise.

Then they flew beneath trailing clouds

And swiftly reached their journey's end,

    From Lemnos through Imbro-

s to Ida with its mighty springs.

At Lectus, where wild beasts abounded,

They left the sea and traveled over high ground.

The forest branches, beneath their footsteps,

Quivered and shook throughout those places.

In that forest the god of Sleep disappeared,

    Hiding from Zeus's eyes upon

A lofty fir towering in the wilderness.

He settled in its tangled branches as a

Bird of mellow voice inhabiting the mountain.

    The gods called it Chalcis,

    And mortals named it Cymindis.

Hera climbed the heights of Gargar-

us, and Zeus looked from his lofty seat.

He melted with longing for her, as on their wedding day,

When, secretly from mother and father,

They fell in love and attained their desire.

He said: Why have you come, leaving Olym-

pus? Where are the horses? She said: No wonder:

I have resolved to travel to earth's farthest reaches,

To visit the parents of the divine company,

    Oceanus and Tethys, who

Raised me in the tender hands of indulgence.

Perhaps I can join their broken bonds.

Long has discord endured in their estrangement,

And affection been cast off in their resentment.

Upon my chariot I journey over the

Land and sea to help them.

The horses bearing me I left beside

Ida's foothills; from you I seek assistance,

Fearing that anger would seize you if

I secretly resolved to seek the company

Of Oceanus, traveling there and back.

    The cloud-gatherer spoke to her:

You shall go; there is ample opportunity.

But now, come with me, then,

Let us share the sweet delights of union.

Never has passion's burning heat troubled me

As love has burned me today.

Never have I loved a mortal woman

Or a goddess with such longing before.

I except none of the veiled ladies:

    Not even Ixion's wife, who

    أوذنيا بنت أكريس التي

    Bore Pirithous, master of discernment;

    Or Danae, Acrisius's daughter, who

    لا أحاشي بنت فينكس التي

    Bore Perseus, unique in his age;

    Nor Phoenix's daughter, who

    أوبثبسٍ ألقمينا الحسن من

    Raised Rhadamanthus and Minos;

Or beautiful Alcmene in Thebes, who

    أو سميلا أوم ذيون الشراب

    Conceived mighty Heracles for me;

    Or Semele, mother of Dionysus of wine;

Nor Demeter, for never with her

    Was I so enamored, nor splendid Latona;

No, not even by your enchanting beauty

Was my heart ever lovestruck as today.

She answered, concealing her stratagem: Is there

A place for love's union upon Ida?

Would not the world see us openly?

Might not some god see us and return,

Carrying the news through the immortals' dwellings?

What dwelling of yours could I enter, what dwelling,

    After this disgrace overtook me?

Surely you know Hephaestus, your son, the

Skillful craftsman, builder of lofty structures:

He built a chamber with secure doors

For you, standing on sturdy pillars.

Come with me into its concealment,

If this desire must be fulfilled,

And spare me exposure's shame in privacy.

He said: Fear no observer's report here,

Whether from humankind or a fearsome god.

I shall spread a lovely cloud above us,

Golden, behind which the sun disappears.

He embraced her, and earth bestowed spring growth:

    Lavender whose fragrance spread abroad,

    And borders clothed with saffron

And clover moistened by lovely dew,

    بهما النور عن الأرض ارتفع

    Glittering beneath scattered droplets.

    The flowers raised them above the ground;

A cloud of gold shone with light,

And drops of rain from its folds

Fell to earth like grains of pearl.

Thus the father of gods, sheltered in delight,

    Remained upon Ida,

His senses stilled in his wife's arms,

In sleep and love upon an array

Of moist flowers spread as soft, fresh carpets.

    Toward the battlefield sweet Sleep

Hurried to the fleet, conveying the news.

He approached Poseidon and said: O

    King who shakes earth's foundations,

    وابل ماشئت ولو حيناً يسير

    Crown the Greeks with mighty glory;

Strike as you please, even for a little while.

Hera has bewitched Zeus's mind, and

Beside her he slumbers with peaceful eyes.

Upon his eyelids my spell has flowed.

Then he hurried onward among the people.

Poseidon stood at the warriors' forefront,

Shouting fiercely with all his strength:

Achaeans, what weakness do I see?

    Shall we grant Hector victory,

To seize the fleet and radiant glory?

That is his desire; it emboldened him

When he saw Achilles blazing with resentment

    And keeping away from battle.

His absence has never doomed us,

Indeed, if every one of us bestirs himself.

Listen now, all of you, and rise!

Let the great warriors bear great shields,

    Helmets shining upon their heads,

And long brown spears within their palms.

Let the resolute men whose shields

Are small cast off their shields

To those weighed down by daunting hardships.

Follow me and charge together; no

Hector will stop us, however fiercely he blazes.

    They all listened, and into

Battle behind him rushed the noble company.

    Diomedes and brave Odysseus,

    And Agamemnon, amid bleeding wounds,

Arranged the soldiers; their blood did not

Keep them seated; they balanced the arms' burdens.

They moved among them, arranging their equipment.

The powerful appeared beneath heavy loads,

And the weak in strength beneath light burdens.

    They tested their equipment until,

Having balanced it, they advanced with furious force.

Poseidon led them, within his palm

A spear lightning-like in its sharpness.

    بل تزاع الخلق من رؤيته

    No equal could confront him with it;

Rather, creatures recoiled at its sight.

Yet Hector did not seek to slip away.

He marshaled the Trojans with forceful cries,

As Poseidon called them to the ordeal.

Each champion upheld his host: this one

Among the Trojans, that among the Achaeans.

The two armies advanced; the sea clashed,

Crashing, and army pressed against army.

Beside their uproar, the billows' roar,

When waves poured upon the shore

Under a north wind, was beyond comparison.

It was nothing beside the companies' crashes

When all hurled themselves upon all.

Nor did the raging fires' roar compare,

    When the forest's heart and lofty trees burned;

    Nor the shrill wind surrounding

    Tall oaks on every side.

The two hosts met; at their forefront

Hector leaped and hurled his spear

At Ajax, returning to confront him.

The spear lodged between the two straps,

Where they stretched broad across his chest:

    A shield-strap crossing a strap

For a sword studded with silver.

They protected him from that deadly thrust.

    Hector turned away, visibly disappointed,

Seeking safety among his people from dreadful death.

    Ajax, with indomitable spirit,

Rushed after him like a flashing meteor.

He reached for a boulder of rock,

    From stones scattered along those roads;

    Some remained between the footsteps,

And some were set as props beneath the ships.

He hurled it, and it traveled whirling

    Like a boy's spinning top.

    Against Hector's shield, beside

His neck upon his chest, it swept down.

He fell backward in a mighty overturn.

As when a mountain oak is uprooted

By Zeus, violently driven by storms,

And sulfur spreads around it in

A piercing stench, while uproar rises,

And the hearts of neighboring people

Tremble in terror at its sight,

    So Hector, in his fall,

Let the spear escape his tightening grip

And rolled, stretched upon the dust.

    وصدى شكته صل عليه

    His helmet and shield remained beside him;

His armor's ringing echoed over him.

The Greeks, amid their war cries,

Rushed toward him in their companies,

    Seeking to overcome him, having

    Showered arrows streaming like hail.

But they did not attain their aim,

For, swift as lightning, assistance came:

The Trojan elite and distinguished companions.

They lowered hard shields around him

And guarded him from the dreadful shower of thrusts.

Among them were Polydamas, and also

    Aeneas and stouthearted Glaucus,

Then Sarpedon, leader of the people

    Of Lycia, and illustrious Agenor.

They carried him where his horses stood,

Sheltered from the clash of those shields,

And went toward Ilium in sorrow.

    Upon a chariot traveling there

    They carried him, breathing hard,

And reached the banks of winding Xanthus,

Whose streams mighty Zeus had poured.

They set him down; then the flowing water,

Cold, they poured upon him, and he revived.

He bent, opening his eyes, and

His black blood came vomiting and streaming,

Flowing from his mouth in torrents.

    Then upon the dust, unconscious,

He fell, and darkness covered both eyes.

It was a blow from whose stunning force

He recovered briefly only to weaken at the knees.

    When Hector departed, the Greeks

Felt battle's ardor surge within their minds.

Ajax, son of Oileus, charged with

A straight spear among the gleaming shafts,

Its socket shaking amid their sockets.

That spear pierced beneath the shoulder

The flank of a champion called Satnius.

His bright-eyed mother was the Naiad who

Had once drawn near to Enops.

She courted him when, long ago, he came

To Satnioeis's bank to graze his sheep.

    رمح آياسٍ حشاه اخترما

    That youth was the offspring of their love;

Ajax's spear cut through his entrails.

Around him raged fierce combat and bloodshed.

    Polydamas rushed and launched

A hard spear, rising to take vengeance.

    Into Prothoenor's shoulder

It sank, casting him down covered in dust.

The victor shouted and claimed the glory:

The spear of Panthous's heroic son did not miss!

From the enemy's midst it pierced a youth's heart,

A prop to bear him when he journeys

To the dwellings of Hades's spacious halls.

The Greeks blazed at this shout,

    Especially murderous Ajax the Greater.

The youth fell before him; he rushed

After the killer with his renowned spear.

    Polydamas swerved and escaped,

And it immediately turned toward Archilochus.

    It pierced the neck-joint

And drove into the bone's core,

Severing his sinews with a dreadful cut.

He fell, his head before his feet,

    Dropping headlong into blood-stained dust.

Ajax shouted in his war cry:

Son of Panthous, the greatest king,

Tell me, have I not slain a greater warrior,

An equal of bold Areilycus's son?

Indeed, he appeared to me only as a youth

Of high courage and noble company,

    Closely connected to Antenor.

Surely he is his son, the heroic champion,

Or his noble brother, skilled with spears.

Ajax spoke as he did, knowing

Before speaking whom he had killed.

    وأخو الميت أكاماس وثب

    The Trojans' hearts blazed with sorrow;

The dead man's brother Acamas leaped

And cast, striking down Promachus, who

Had been dragging the slain man's body.

Then he called out with taunting insults:

    Greeks, you archers,

Given to boasts in pride and vanity,

    Not all deaths have been our allotted share;

You too have a portion and a claim.

Did you not suppose noble Promachus

    Deserved death after Archilochus?

    Does not every man yearn

For a brother to avenge him afterward,

Ever watching for the severing of necks?

    That boast burned the Greeks,

    Especially King Peneleos, who rose

And threw at Acamas; but Aca-

mas turned away, seeking paths of flight.

    So the spear struck Ilioneus,

The only treasured offspring of Phorbas,

    Hermes's favored one in Troy,

Whom he endowed with sheep and cattle

    And heaped abundant blessings upon.

It pierced the eyebrow and drove out the eye,

Then lodged within the skull's bone.

He fell to the dust, spreading both hands.

Peneleos drew his sword and hastened,

Severing the head within its helmet.

    وحكت في كفه خشخاشةً

    It fell, the spear still in its deadly wound;

In his hand it resembled a poppy

Cut and torn from its growing place.

He spoke, raising it upon that shaft:

Trojans, truthfully report this dreadful news,

That his parents may shed streaming tears,

    As will Promachus's wife when

    The Greeks return after victory.

She will not see him return when the army returns

Nor enjoy his presence in those lands.

    يبتغي كل سبيلاً للفرار

    The Trojans looked about them,

    Each seeking a path of escape;

Then they turned away, trembling and terrified.

Daughters of the god Zeus, who from

    Olympus's summit behold the multitude,

Tell me now whom you thought

    First broke their foremost ranks,

When toward the Greeks, amid the fighting,

Poseidon tilted the balance of advantage.

It was Ajax who against Hyrtius,

    Gyrtius's offspring, first prevailed.

    The Mysians mourned over him.

    وعلى مرميرس الهول حمل

    Then Antilochus killed Phalces

    And brought terror upon Mermerus;

Then Meriones struck Morys, and also

Hippotion, laying them low with his sword's edge.

    Then Teucer struck Periphetes

And Prothoon, and took the spoils.

    ومن الشاكلة الجوف اقتضب

    Menelaus aimed at Hyperenor

    And ripped his belly open from the flank;

Through the wound the stricken man's soul departed.

But the swiftest youth among the warriors

Was none but Ajax the Lesser.

He charged after the enemy, confronting

Their army and sweeping through its retreat.

Wherever his footsteps sped, he overtook

A seeker of escape and slew him.

Armored men fell under his assaults,

Tumbling from an army doomed to perish,

On which Zeus imposed defeat and rout.
