He said, “Listen, Hector, for in my mind

a bold spirit urges me to make ready

and go by night to the fleet, watching

their movements, scouting and keeping watch.

So raise your staff, then, and swear solemnly

that I shall be rewarded when I resolve to return

with Achilles’ steeds and a chariot in which

his hard, gleaming steel has been fitted.

Then I shall go, penetrating to the heart of the guarded camp,

scouting; then I shall surely reach the ship

where the kings with Agamemnon have

considered whether flight or waiting is preferable.

I was not, as you know, an ignorant scout,

that I should disappoint your expectations of me.”

Hector raised the staff in both his hands, swearing:

“I call fearsome Zeus to witness against me:

no one but you shall mount Achilles’ horses; rather,

you shall receive them from me as a lawful, welcome gift.”
