    At once Agamemnon complied, commissioning

All the heralds to muster the troops and the chiefs.

They called them at the top of their voices, and it was not long

Before they came, complete in numbers and equipment.

And the nobles around Atreides were forming

Their ranks, while Athena, supreme in might,

Quickened the troops' steps and breathed

Into their souls the will to brave terror and hardship.

She gazed with her water-hued eyes, strengthening

Their hearts, and appeared with the everlasting shield.

Its fringes numbered a hundred, each worth a hundred

Calves, and never coming loose for all eternity.

They circled it, hanging down, and had been cast

From pure gold, blazing with light.

Until they hastened on, and war's blaze seemed to them

Sweeter than returning to wives and children.

Their legions advance in armor that flashes

Above the sky, to the firmament's highest vault,

Like fire setting a forest ablaze upon a mountain,

And light streaming from it far into the distance.

And they left the tents and swift ships, and in

That open space spread out, clad in chain mail.

    As land birds flock densely—pelicans

    And geese and long-necked cranes—

Clamoring in the meadow of Asius by the Cayster,

From every pass, in flocks along the paths,

They vied with piercing cries, making

Those meadows ring with them amid the crowded throng.

And the hooves had a beat, and the sandals had

A pounding that shattered the mass of solid rock.

Until they stood on the bank of Scamander,

As numerous as the leaves of a meadow dewy in spring.

They settled on its bank in numbers beyond reckoning,

Burning with vengeance's fire deep within their livers.

Like flies when spring has come and they have

Hovered round the pen of a herder of goats and small sheep,

They swarm in search of milk, swooping

Upon the bowls, beyond reckoning or number.

And each chief of a people stood apart

With his men, like a herdsman alone with the flock he drives.

At once he gathers their scattered bands when they have mingled

Among thousands on the open land, if he so wills.

And among them, draped in the mantle of pride,

Atreides stood in glory whose pillars towered high.

And he resembled Zeus in eyes and head,

Poseidon in chest, and Ares in bodily strength.

On that day the thunder-crasher decreed

That no one among the troops should rival him.

So he was like a bull among the cattle herds, whenever

He stands proudly above his herds and rules.
