And the sons of Troy hastened to attack; at their head
The sons of Troy marched forward with their chests,
Hector clashed with the foes and confronted them.
Colliding with the enemy host, despoiling them.

Then he slew Menesthes and Anchialus together,
Then Menestheus and Ajax fell together
In a chariot that bore them both, while he advanced.
when fate betrayed them in battle.

Then Ajax's passions flared, and he sprang forward,
Ayax was roused by the tides of passion
Sending a spear flying, its tip hurtling onward.
as branches of his madness wildly tossed.

Deafening Amphius, the son of Oïleus
At Paesus had been awash in treasures.
on whom the gifts of Zeus once richly poured.

He sought to aid Troy, and death drove him
Eager to defend Troy, his zeal propelled him
To where flanks and sword-belts were transfixed together.
where the joints of his armor began to bend.

He fell; and down swooped, eager for his armor,
Grasping at enemies’ weapons, over-eager,
Ajax, but the showering arrows thwarted him.
Ayax was checked by the sharp showering arrows.

Upon the slain man's corpse he planted his foot,
Standing on the corpse of the slain, he dragged it
Drawing out the keen-bladed spear while slaughter raged.
while slaughter and death continuously whirled.

And he desisted, parrying their arrows with his shield,
He refrained from equalling their ire
Lest he grow distracted and the throngs overwhelm him.
lest the masses notice and mock his frenzy.

And amid the clash of battle, the hand of fate drove
And when the war peaked, the hand of fate
Tlepolemus rushing toward Sarpedon.
led Sarpedon to first accost Tlepolemus.

The scion of Heracles and his equal adversary.
