And Athena strengthened the hand of Tydeus's son.

Then he swooped down, severing the sinews of their necks.

    وَتَصَدُّغٌ وَتَوَجُّعٌ وتَفَجُّعُ

    A sword slashed; blood flowed, staining the earth;

And battered temples, pain, and lamentation.

Like a lion that surprised a flock unguarded

By a shepherd, he tore it apart and would not stop.

He kept dealing deadly blows until he had hewn down

Twelve champions, cleaving them with his keen sword.

And Odysseus there, whenever a man was slain,

Seized him by the heels and cleared the way,

Out of care for the horses, which had not been trained

To gallop over corpses, so they would not falter.

Until, to Rhesus, the thirteenth among them,

The two came; Diomedes felled him, striking him down.

He slew him while the king was heaving sighs,

Troubled and terrified by a phantom that had visited him—

A phantom in Diomedes' form, which Pallas had

Sent to strike blows upon the king's head.

And Odysseus loosed the horses, coupling them with

Their harness, and moved briskly off with them.

And he drove them with his bow, since he had missed

A studded whip suspended from the chariot.

    لكِن ذِيُومِذُ ظَلَّ لا يَتَزَعزَعُ

    Once far away, he whistled to call Diomedes;

    But Diomedes remained, not budging,

Hesitating: should he drag away by its pole a

Chariot in which the arms of Rhesus gleamed,

Or lift it in both his hands,

Or make the Thracians gulp death's choking draught?
