Longing blazed in the innermost depths and throbbed.
Longing blazed in my inner self and was disturbed
And worry and sorrows drained what they had wounded.
And sorrow and worries have poured whenever

فالدمع للبين منكم قد رمى وهما
By God, is there healing for wasting sickness?
I swear by God, can longing be healed?
So tears at parting from you have shot forth and streamed [reading uncertain].
For tears have been shed for separation between us

Or is there an end to estrangement from loved ones [reading uncertain]?
Or for the couple to be disconnected from loved ones
And sorrow has assailed the heart with afflictions.
And grief has overwhelmed the heart with passions

Indeed, hope is the life-breath of souls, and so they rejoiced.
Indeed, hope is the spirit of spirits, so it rejoiced
So the sorrows that had assailed them fell away from them.
And whatever sorrows attacked it were dispelled

Then I perceived these sorrows so they flared up
And afterward kindled a blaze in the innermost depths.
And ignited again in the inner self, burning

والشوق يزعج قلباً بالغرام نما
For longing inflames whoever has love's bewilderment in his heart,
Thus longing inflames one who has passion in the heart
and yearning unsettles a heart that grew in passionate love.
And yearning perturbs a heart that love has grown
