Let those of knowledge and guidance weep for the faith,

For its landmarks have been effaced throughout the worlds.

Humanity's attention and its scheming have turned

To this world and the gathering of dirhams,

To mending their worldly lives by corrupting their religion,

And acquiring its delights and foods.

    سواءً لديهم ذو التقى والجرائم

    They make enemies over it—nay, they befriend its people;

The pious and the criminal are alike to them.

And he laments it, sorrowful and protesting injustice,

And speaks openly of what is in his breast, concealing nothing.

But as for the upright faith and guidance,

And Abraham's creed with its firm foundations,

For it—by Him who splits the date-stones—there is none

Among the people to weep, grieve, or feel remorse.

Its landmarks have worn away—indeed, been effaced—

And nothing but the name remains among the worlds.

No one enjoining what is right is known among us,

Nor anyone restraining the gravest crimes.

And the path of Abraham's creed has been left

Obliterated, now effaced in the world [wording unclear].

It is gone from among us—how could it not be, when there have blown

Over it the dust-bearing winds in every region?

Religion is nothing but love, hatred, and allegiance,

And likewise disavowal of every erring sinner.

Yet none follows it, holding fast

To the faith of the Prophet of al-Abtah, of Hashim's line.

So we do not reckon what has befallen religion, through which

The gracious creed was effaced, among the crushing calamities,

So that we might grieve over our failings and turn

To God to have our grievous sins erased.

So we complain to God of hearts grown hard,

And covered by the stain of those sins they have earned.

Do we not, whenever someone comes to us besmeared

With the filth of the polytheists—any wrongdoer at all—

Welcome them gladly with greetings and praise,

And rush to honor them with banquets?

Yet the infallible one has disavowed every Muslim

Who lives in the abode of unbelief without severing ties.

But worldly prudence, in our eyes,

Is making peace with the disobedient, with every sinner.

Oh, Islam's ordeal at the hands of every ignorant person!

And oh, how few its helpers among the learned!

This is the time for patience, if you are resolute:

So persevere in the faith with the patience of those of firm resolve.

For whoever holds fast to the upright faith which

Came to us from the infallible one, Adam's choicest descendant,

Among the Companions, the Prophet's noble companions.

For Him; God is the most merciful of all who show mercy.

That He may grant this faith victory, after the erasure of

Its landmarks on earth among the worlds.

And invoke blessings on the infallible one and all his family,

And his companions, people of piety and noble virtues,

As many as lightning flashes, grains of sand, and pebbles,

As long as rain pours from amid the clouds.
