Glory be to Him who brought all things into being,

whose command concerning decrees takes effect upon us.

In His wisdom He ordained a decree and carried it out,

that we shall draw far away from those who love us.

He decreed it, though we had grown up together; hence

separation became a substitute for our closeness.

How often, foolishly, does he reproach us when we remember you—

one untouched by the longing that once touched us.

He passes the night at peace, with no worry to keep him awake.

In ignorance and forgetfulness, he does not know what we endure.

A man of pleasures persistently rebukes a sorrowful man [reading uncertain],

who has not found solace for a day; far be it that anyone should make us forget

you—any consoler among all the people—

when you are stars for people, guiding us [reading uncertain].

By God, no day has passed since your parting

without longing in the heart that will never let us forget you.

Do not think that distance from you can change us,

or that we seek a substitute for you or for those who love us.

No, by Him who sent down the Quran as an admonition,

as command, prohibition, reminder, and clarification:

we shall not forget you as long as we live, nor find a substitute.

How could that be, when separation's fire sears us,

and tears flow like rain pouring down through the night,

or like pearls coming unstrung as they fall?

    يشكو البعاد اشتياقاً ثم يبكينا

    The memory of a lover made them flow when it came to his mind [reading uncertain];

he laments the distance in longing, then makes us weep.

He laments his distance from loved ones, recalling

the lovers' bond as it was in those days.

He never finds comfort in sleep after our departure,

and God knows that separation grieves us.

O Lord, O Lord, reunite us forever!

Indeed, the eye has long poured forth its tears at times [reading uncertain],

weeping for nights passed in companionship, now that they have departed

and left the sweetness of this life as foul washings.

How I yearn for those nights! If only they would return, for

consolation has dwindled, and the heart has become sorrowful.

Yet we hope for mercy from the Lord of the Throne,

that God may raise up our caller to divine oneness,

and spread knowledge after ignorance, for effaced are

its traces, and stars among us have sunk from sight.

    فأظلم الكون واسترت أعادينا

    They were guides for this creation, then passed away;

the universe grew dark, and our enemies rejoiced [reading uncertain].

    فبان من بينهم ثلم يعرينا

    They were stars, and we found our way by them;

then a breach appeared in their midst, leaving us exposed.

May God never leave Najd bereft of you,

when you are the offspring of a scholar who made the world manifest.

    And a successor from among his sons took up the task;

may he remain among you as a legacy, not leaving us bereft.

Oh, if only I knew: will the days return

with companionship one day? May the days give us hope,

so that we may meet after this separation, at ease,

while separation has settled among those who hate us.

O you who, despite the distance, kept me joyful company [reading uncertain],

a poem has come to us from you, consoling us—

a beneficial poem, unique in its grandeur,

pleasing in beauty, clarity, and elucidation.

So listen—may you be guided—to verses within our ability,

offered to you; and [unclear] may also be offered.

Then may blessings and salutations of peace, as long as there coo

the gray doves on the branches, making us weep,

be offered to the best messenger and his companions,

and his radiant family, who made religion manifest.
