Thurayya of Syria surpassed every innocent maiden;

young women and young men bow before her.

A Syrian woman—her cheeks are her paradises;

so she has a Ridwan from her own self.

Were the Pleiades' bright stars arrayed, they could not rival

her mouth, which is pearls and silver beads.

بلغت كمال الحسن قبل بلوغها

فالنيرات لحسنها غلمان

She attained beauty's perfection before reaching maturity;

so the radiant stars are pages to her beauty.

I remained unaware that her languid gaze

is a snare that catches the wide-awake youth,

حتى لثمت خدودها وتنبهت

فإذا به شركٌ به إنسان

until I kissed her cheeks and awoke,

and behold, it was a snare with a man inside!
