Tell the reproacher: whether you know it or not,

the gazelle’s coyness causes me no pain.

If his dusky lips have made me thirst, how often

have I kissed his mouth and spent the night entrusting mine to it!

I love him, languid-eyed; upon his cheeks

is a moon that bashfulness dots with stars.

And his stature is like a warrior’s spear,

swaying beneath a banner of jet-black hair.

The sun does not shine while he is veiled,

and the bright stars do not smile unless he smiles.

He came, threatening me with the keen sword of his glance,

and attacks with a sharp lance—his supple, stemlike form.

He proudly averts his gaze from my crimson blood, which

has made my tears resemble the extract of red dyewood.

So I spread my cheek upon the road for his sandal,

in abasement, and said: Judgment is yours, so judge.

    من عادة الكافور إمساك الدم

    Then he took pity and wiped away my tears with his fingertips;

it is camphor’s way to staunch blood.
