Remain safe from the terror of grievous suffering,

O nightingale of the eloquent and the masters of rhetoric.

And walk proudly in the brocade of joy, and leave me

Shrouded in my melancholy and my misery.

Shall I, then, draw light from a star among the cups,

And from a dark-lipped gazelle among the oryx,

While I am he whom time has raised and cast down,

Until I lost my jewels and my radiance?

Can my company, then, be praised after Ibrahim,

Or, after Layla, can my intimate talk be desired?

Joy has died; it will not rise again after her who

Puts the full moons to shame, and the lord of the generous.

No perfume after ʿArūs; serenity has departed,

And frowning has erased cheerfulness, O my lord.
