O nightly companion of lofty honors and their virtuous master,

The sea complains of the land to your justice because of my tears.

Fulfill my hope and send a scribe to Ajlun,

other than me; for I do not love calves, even were they to yield milk.

Has a servant who praises and thanks you sinned,

that the desolate land should keep him far from your face?

By your honor, my dwellings have grown dark to me,

since your radiant dawns turned away from me.

And, from my fright and the pouring of my tears, I remained

like a sparrow shuddering, drenched by rain.

I dwell beside beasts in the pitch-black night,

and the ugliest ghouls when dawn rises.

So if you will not consent to my departure from villages

where I have become like a heart whose chest has deserted it,

then be a support after me for the comfort of my children—the

cherished ones—for wicked Ajlun is my grave.
