O dwelling, may the clouds never wet your soil!

Why do you not lament with me for your master?

Have you forgotten, O hard-hearted one, a refined man

whom kings used to call an angel?

His right hand's bounty bound him by pledges

never to tell a petitioner, 'Is that enough for you?'

Oh, how scant your loyalty! Deaf be your echo! How

cruel a dwelling you are, and how defiant!

Where are those you saw and heard,

    praising no dwelling but you?

After that full moon, has any visitor come to you

except to ask, 'Where is that one now?'

Alas, my grief for him! He now lies

among graves he takes for celestial spheres.

Alas, my grief for him, kind and virtuous!

He was never miserly, nor a liar.

The needy hear no words from him

but the three greetings and 'Here, take this.'

    أمسى بها لا يستطيع حراكا

    The scorching wind twisted snares for him;

in them he was left unable to stir.

And it called for youth's betrayer, who consigned

the deadly horseman in him to the dust.

May her hands perish, that wronged greatness!

She plucked the roses and left the thorns.

O family of Ibrahim, the garden of serenity

has withered and grown thorny since Ibrahim's passing.

So roll upon the ashes, and persist

in wearing mourning, and be like ascetics.

And weep for the young man, for whom death wove

a garment of dust for his youth, and fashioned it.

And erased our lovely nights, and left the

    days pitch-dark after his departure.

What harm would it have done Death, my son, had she pitied

your youth and chosen your father as your ransom?

For death, my son, is dearer to my eye

than seeing the world and not seeing you.

Had the state I endured been depicted

for you in the tomb by an artist, it would have made you weep.

By God, death spared my last spark of life

only to burn it in the fire of your absence.

My grief for you, and the grief of every hopeful seeker

who would not have prospered without you!

My grief for you, and the grief of all who likened

your face to the full moon, your radiance to the suns!

And the full moon is your slave, and the sun a singing maid

for you; and the stars are among the pebbles of your abode.

I wonder: is your beauty in the dust, O my heart's desire,

still visible, or has your splendor left you?

I never thought, O sovereign of my soul,

that the dust was a garden for your youth,

until I saw you pillowed in the tomb,

and its earth fragrant with your sweet scent.

He will please you, my son, with whatever you choose,

and my heart is certain that He has pleased you.
