O fragrant breeze, what has greeted you with its fragrance—

the breaths of Darin, or the breaths of her perfume?

And you, O lightning, what sent you by night toward a grieving man

bereft of sleep—her radiance, or her front teeth?

And, O dove of the sanctuary, did you teach my enchantress the

lament—by your Lord—or were you taught her lament?

Your two states are a marvel: separation has not frightened you

ever; nor has illness befallen you and compelled her to lament.

    لو مس بعضُهما الأمواه لظَّاها

    Nor have grief and burning longing stirred you as they have me;

had even a little of either touched the waters, it would have set them ablaze.

Here is your heart, rejoicing in blossoms,

while my heart’s desire dwells in the gardens of glory.

By God, O fragrant breezes, describe to her

my longing, if she permits—and the payment is the ground she treads.

Perhaps a garden of roses, once concealed

from me by the veil, her face will reveal to me,

and so dispel my suffering, just as

the emir’s hand dispelled the cares I used to dread.
