My lord, may fortune's reversals never alter your days,
My Lord, your days have not changed
Nor may the ages encroach upon your decrees.
Nor have your eternal laws passed away

Nor may a land whose star you are be bereft of you,
No land remains without you as its star
Nor may gleaming swords and armor rise to glory through anyone else.
Nor does the full moon or the crescent rise except by your will

Why do I see people's unsold wares now in demand,
Why do I see people being elevated to high office
Yet my choicest poems have found no market with you?
While my excellent poetry goes unrewarded?

What makes every fool boast of his position
While the erudite scholar's station is toil?
While the station of the scholar is but toil and trouble?

And every raven chick a ripe fig

The wine of joy, though they never approached your court;

They are men who descended upon meadows of dew
Yet never drank from bounty's sweet waters.
But did not drink from the Euphrates of generosity

Will you not quench their thirst with bounty's torrent,
If only you would remove their anguish
As sweet water quenches the burning thirst of one circling it?
With a torrent of bounty, as fresh water relieves thirst

My children's words to their neighbor have hurt me:
My children's words have harmed me with the neighbors
“The promise has not even borne green dates, let alone ripe ones to eat.
"The promise was so ripe, we thought the figs could be eaten"

During the chief's tenure, your aims went unfulfilled;
In the bloom of youth your plans did not succeed
How can they succeed when the successor rules?”
How then can they succeed when old age rules?

By your dignity, my lord, neither is my son
By your glory, my Lord, neither my children
Rebellious, nor am I, by the Merciful, a wrongdoer.
Nor I have transgressed, we take the Merciful as our witness

From what I intend—but gold has held it back.
From my desires, but only the lack of gold

When a generous man sees it, delight stirs him;
When seen by one noble, they bring joy
And if a base man sees it, companions stir him.
When seen by one base, they incur wrath

Ask, if you wish, about the people whose houses
Houses and livestock—where did their earnings come from?
And livestock I wonder how they obtained

While we have more dependents, when they are counted?
When we have more dependents if numbers are counted?

This hint is enough for me, circumstances and tact
From saying more is tact, brevity, and courtesy.
And propriety restrain me from more

The intelligent, sagacious guide

Clouds too sometimes hold back and sometimes pour forth.
The clouds too sometimes withhold and pour down rain

Dispel my distress with your bounty, and win my praises;
Dispel my sorrow with your bounty, and take advantage of my praise
Gratitude does not arise until there is cause for it.
Gratitude comes only when the cause exists

The Turks admit that superiority lies with you
To you; so favor us, and the Arabs will bear witness.
So favor us, and the Arabs will bear witness!
