Life is where wine and sweet basil are,

    and bashful maidens and boys.

There is no life in this world for a wealthy man

whose fortune young women and young men have not yet exhausted.

For whom have you hoarded wealth, if you do not give it

to a moonlike youth, a cup bubbling in his hand,

and to a guileless, fair-skinned girl whose anklet enchants,

so that the flint beneath it almost dances?

If you say, 'For the poor,' you lie: no thirst was quenched

with water from your house for a thirsty beggar.

Or if you say, 'For the heirs,' you are thought ignorant:

Are they to be honored through it while you are humiliated?
