فيعرف من لا يعرف السنة الغمضا
Is it not time for the eyes to look kindly on the ailing,
Should eyes be pleased at afflicted hearts' expense,
So that one who knows no drowsiness might know sleep,
Then those who know not custom will take offense.

And for ʿAlwā to spare one true in love her rejection?
Turn thou distraction from the truthful heart,
For the sword of estrangement is sharper than the sword of her glances.
Else sharp disdain outdoes the sword's offense.

With it she drove away my sleep and exhausted my riding camels,
Slumber has fled me and composedness too;
And left me in no condition to rise.
No state is there I now can well commence.

By your Lord, you two, tell her: gentleness is a recommended practice,
For mercy's sake, say her to gentleness-
And love of faithfulness remains a duty, O my heart’s desire.
Loyalty and faith yet have valid pretense.

Perhaps she who crushed my heart with her parting
Perchance my dear, who set my heart at ease,
Will turn away from solace and reject it utterly.
Will from solace abstain, and turn away.
