If my yearning is hidden from my loved ones,

Then God knows my dejection and burning grief.

Though separation hurt my soul and was not appeased,

It was enough that my enviers were satisfied when my soul neared death.

They say I forsook Layla for Zaynab,

And Egypt, and all in Egypt, for al-Salihiyya.

Had they spoken truth in anything but this, she would have believed

Their claims—Layla would—and found fault with my honor.

By the sanctity of my love for her, I did not seek separation from her,

But the vicissitudes of the nights sought it.

Never did I pass a night without recalling the sweetness of my time with her,

And the time of the white nights in al-Azbakiyya.

She who reared me as a child on the bank of her Nile,

And suckled me with the milk of pure learning,

And sheltered me in the shade of every leafy grove,

Debating with me over Darin's perfume in the way that [is best].

May God water my days there with the finest gentle rain,

And bless our drinking companions there, and my female companion.

And may those haunts that shone remain forever,

With the radiance of fair women, in joy and plenty.

And may rain drench gardens I used to frequent,

And spread over them the shade of every leafy grove.

For these are gardens that, were rain to shun them,

Every innocent maiden's tears would overflow upon them.

In winter their roses are restored to us

By their beauties' cheeks and the red wine in jars.

And in the darkest nights their cups shine

Like the shining cheeks of an abashed young gazelle.

Beside every guileless beauty, as though he were

Water poured from the sky, or a silver ingot.

Ah, may a fragrant breath of your sweet scent, O east wind,

Carry my greetings to my noble loved ones.

Perhaps the generosity of the virtuous will bring me back

To the land of the good, the people of honor.

So we may dwell in a land that forever brings forth glory,

And prides itself on its noble, mighty people.

When Paradise's wide-eyed maidens are mentioned to its graceful women,

They say, "Our beauties make those maidens needless."

As though its maidens were in harmony with its groves:

For its groves never lament without the maidens singing.

Its anemones are envied by smiling lips,

And its narcissi by Babylonian eyes.

May God water and bless it with a downpour

That vies with every rival in its pouring rain,

And protect its domain from long nights

That mar the pleasures of the short nights.

And may the Merciful never bring a raven near it

That would scare away the nightingale of joy.
