أرى في صدغك المعوج دالاً

أرى في صدغك المعوج دالاً

براها اللَه قوساً للمهالكْ

براها اللَه قوساً للمهالكْ

I see a dāl in your curved temple-lock;

I see in your curved cheek a letter dal

God carved it into a bow of doom.

Allah made it an arc for destruction

وددنا لو تنقَّط بالآلي

وددنا لو تنقَّط بالآلي

ولكن نقطت من مسك خالك

ولكن نقطت من مسك خالك

We wished it were dotted with pearls,

I wish it was dotted with moles

but it was dotted with musk from your mole.

But it was dotted with your musk-like beauty spot

فصارت داله بالنقط ذالاً

فصارت داله بالنقط ذالاً

فقلت لها افعلي أشهى فعالك

فقلت لها افعلي أشهى فعالك

So its dāl became a dhāl through dotting;

So the letter dal became with dots a letter dhal

so I said to her, 'Do the most delightful of your deeds.'

I told it to do its most desired act

لذلك صارت العشاق هلكى

لذلك صارت العشاق هلكى

فها أنا هالكٌ من أجل ذلك

فها أنا هالكٌ من أجل ذلك

For that reason, the lovers perished;

That's why lovers became destroyed

so here I am, perishing because of that.

So here I am, destroyed because of that
