رأى بيدي صبراً فأعرض عابساً

وقال أراك اليوم تجنح للصبر
He saw aloe in my hand and turned away, frowning.
In my hands he saw patience, so he turned away frowning,
And said: I see you inclining toward patience today.
And said, "Today I see you incline towards patience."
فلتso I said (apparently intended: فقلت) لهto him هذاthis حنوطembalming balm حشاشتيthe last remnant of my life
فلت له هذا حنوط حشاشتي

فقد جنحت يا بارد الريق للقبر
So I said to him: This is embalming balm for what remains of my life;
I said to him, "This is the perfume of my burial spices,
For I have turned toward the grave, O you whose saliva is cool.
For you have inclined, O chilled of saliva, towards the grave."
