Had I always had a dirham that sings without a mouth,
If I had but one coin that chirps without a mouth
I would not have become like a shepherd without sheep.
I would not have become like a shepherd without sheep

Nor would my diamond cup have been empty of water-mixed wine,
Nor an empty cup devoid of sparkling wine
rose-like in color and ruby-like in worth.
Like a rose in color and ruby in value

A moonlike youth hurries with it, a trace within his mouth
With which the moon seeks to heal his lips' wounds
like palm blossom, concealed there by red ʿanam.
Like blossoms hidden behind his veil of stars

Or a lovely maiden: whenever her buttocks sway,
Or a lovely gazelle who whenever she stirs
her supple figure sways, a branch atop a mountain.
Sways her cloak over a branch as a flag

But for the dinar's estrangement, she would not have grown angry
Had the coin not been so fickle I'd have never
at me even for a day, nor split the staff of my pledges.
Fallen out with it nor would it have split my perfect reputation

So tell whoever says I have gone gray from old age:
So say to him who said I grew arrogant with age
Set aside care's onslaught, and behold the onslaught of ambition.
Leave off the howling worries and look to the howling ambitions

For resolve is a leg, but it has no foot
For resolve is a leg but without legs
except pure gold—and who walks without a foot?
It cannot walk unless with vigor and he who walks without legs

By God, my foot shall not bring me near wine
By Allah if poverty brought me to seek drink
if my arbiter does not rid me of the age that afflicts me—
My principles would no longer be those I've stood by

The best of nobles is Ibn Bustam whose mouth
is generous with 'Take this,' and miserly with 'No' and 'Not.'
Is smooth with him but biting without fault

Benevolent: when the first seasonal rain closes its palm,
Righteous, when the miser hides his comfort
his generosity takes the place of the downpour of steady rains.
His generosity springs forth from the clouds of bounty

For he is spring, the spring of those who seek refuge in him,
He is the spring, spring of those who seek refuge in him
while the earth is emptier than a sandal without leather.
And the land more generous than a sandal without sole

And he protects his neighbor from oppression that would humiliate him,
The protector neighbor from tyranny disgraced by it
and kindles the fire for night travelers in the darkness.
And the kindling fire for those who suffer injustice

He who used to give us allowance in the days
of prosperity, in pure gold, undiminished.
Of prosperity unsullied payment

What, then, of today, when our clouds have become
But now our clouds have become
like a fire-stick, with no torrent but blazing fire,
Like tinder without rain except paltry bits

May our lord's coins forever trill, trill

The cooing of doves and banish sorrow with song

Alive but without wealth or propriety
