God bless the beauty who passed us by before dawn,

in a robe like the tails of peacocks.

She hastened her steps to avoid speaking to me,

as though a priest's staff were in my palm.

I called to her, tears streaming from my eyes:

'O my heart's desire, the purse's jewels are not my aim.'

She said, 'I know: you want union.' I said to her,

'My tears flowed, and my white camels traveled through the darkness.'

She said, 'Union with me is hard-won; guarding it are eyes

that crush mighty men's heads with arrows.'

I said, 'I fear no arrows from eyes, if

these breasts of yours are among my breastworks.'

She burst out laughing, then said, 'You horrid man, when

were maidens' breasts ever like sacks?'

'What are you, by God, man?' I said, 'Sorrowful.'

She said, 'Wretched!' I said, 'If you do not enter my lair.'

She said, 'Can you afford my dower?' I said, 'I have maxims

which I have prepared in notebooks for proud display.'

She lowered her head, then said, 'This is strange indeed:

    poetry bows only to paupers.'

    تزول والشعر باقٍ في القراطيس

    I said, 'O my heart's desire, wealth is perishable;

it vanishes, while poetry endures on paper.'

She said, 'You are right,' and a partridge sang between us,

from her anklet, standing in for the ringing of bells.

And oh, what an hour—how lovely it was!

In it, Sulayman encountered the throne of Bilqis.
