    God be praised for our night in Jilliq! The darkness

    was daylight from the radiance of the ladies of the curtained chambers.

    تفتر بين زهورهن عقار

    And their mouths were like gardens;

    wine smiled amid their blossoms.

    I sucked the wine from them, without holding back,

    and said: the hours of joy are brief.

    By God, I thought it none other than the Night of

    Decree, in which sins are erased.

    That night Mayy's figure swayed, and I was clasped

    to her breasts by a dawn-bright arm wearing a bracelet.

    لولاه ما بردت لقلبي نار

    And with her I gained the wine of cool saliva;

    without it, my heart's fire would never have cooled.

    She spent the night offering me cups, unhurriedly,

    and on the cups lay scattered drops of sweet saliva.

    Until, when she had lined her eyes with sleep's kohl-sticks,

    and what the fates decreed had come to pass,

    I roused her for the morning draught—though not yet near

    was morning's hour—a young gazelle with an air of dignity.

    Then she smiled in wonder and said, “Woe is me!

    Where is daylight?” I said, “You are daylight.”
