By God, O east wind, breathe!

For my endurance has vanished, and my gathering-place lies barren.

And drift gently toward al-Sham, and convey

to Layla the greeting of the love-distraught, far-distant one.

Tell her: I left your lover wandering distraught,

weeping like a rain cloud bursting forth,

awaiting the dream-image's approach, as though he

thought the dream-image visited one who had not dozed.

I treated him with the fragrance of ʿarār; he said, “It has not

quelled my heart's blaze or my apprehension.

Leave the ʿarār upon its hills, and soothe

my soul with the breaths of dusky lips.”

    And if she refuses to return the greeting, hold your peace;

for one bent on estrangement utters not a word.

But if, O wind, the palms of contentment clothe

her cheeks in a hue like the wine of goblets,

and tenderness begins to sway the bān-tree of her figure,

as a branch sways upon a smooth sand dune,

say, “Have mercy on him with a visit that gives him life,

for, after God, the healing of souls rests with you.”

My soul be ransom for a gazelle I left behind,

swaying proudly amid rose-red and yellow hues.

Fair-skinned, she leads the carefree man to love her

through the blackness of her gaze's magnetic jewel,

and slays him with arched eyebrows

like keen swords, crescents, and bows.

    Bedouin-breasted—oh, my longing for

two pomegranates upon a gracefully swaying branch!

She appears in silken shirts, as though she were

a houri in a robe of fine silk.

Had the great king beheld her beauty,

he would congratulate the throne on her and say to her, “Sit.”

Gray hair turned union with her away from me, just as

a miser turns away the hand of a penniless stranger.

Today no army of fidelity is encamped

with me, nor does a caravan of affection halt for the night.

By her life, by her life—the oath that

    every glorifier and sanctifier accepts—

I shall surely seek union with her through poems

that delight every expander of hemistichs and maker of five-part stanzas.

Ibn Asʿad raised their worth by accepting them,

so they came to vaunt themselves over the coursing, retreating stars.

And who but Ibn Asʿad is looked to

for a supplicant's good fortune and a despairing man's ill luck?

Shall I urge my mount toward courts other than his,

when he is springtime for travelers by night and before dawn,

and fear the shroud of darkness whose full moon is crowned

with al-ʿAlī's name, and clothed in his radiance?

Ibn Asʿad's bounty has erased the dwelling of thirst,

and with his cleaving sword he has broken the captive's chains.

So let the horizons keep their bow of calamities far

from me, and let the fury of ill-doing time subside.

For it is he whose sword blades have left

the blackness of battles like a sunlit day,

and struck the oppressors' necks, and smoothed

for visitors the road to Jerusalem.

Today no wolf of corruption runs wild

there, nor is a night traveler haunted by fears.

Live on, O restorer of security, alive and radiant,

after it had perished from the terror of pitch-dark night,

benevolent, easing a thirsty man's anguish as he cries:

“By God, O east wind, breathe!”
