لأحمد شكري بهجةٌ في المحافلِ

ولكنها لم تأت يوماً بطائلِ

Ahmad Shukri is all delight in gatherings,

Ahmad Shukri has splendor in gatherings,

Yet that delight has never yielded anything of worth.

yet it has never yielded any benefit.

ومرشحةٌ تكسو الصواهل رونقاً

ومرشحةٌ تكسو الصواهل رونقاً

ولكنها لم تعل في ظهر صاهل

ولكنها لم تعل في ظهر صاهل

And a cry of “Welcome!” that robes the neighing steeds in splendor,

And a saddlecloth that clothes neighing steeds in splendor,

Yet never has it mounted a charger’s back.

yet it has not risen onto a neighing steed's back.

يجود بها المولى على كل صاحبٍ

يجود بها المولى على كل صاحبٍ

فيقبضها بالوهم لا بالأنامل

فيقبضها بالوهم لا بالأنامل

The patron freely bestows it on every friend,

The master bestows it generously on every companion,

Who grasps it only in fancy, never with his fingertips.

توهمت أني في المنام رأيتها

توهمت أني في المنام رأيتها

وقلت متى ألقاك في كف آمل

وقلت متى ألقاك في كف آمل

I fancied that I saw it in a dream,

I imagined that I had seen it in a dream,

And said, “When shall I find you in a hopeful hand?”

and said, "When shall I meet you in a hopeful person's palm?"

فقالت أنا مثل الثريا بعيدةٌ

فقالت أنا مثل الثريا بعيدةٌ

وأين الثريا من يد المتناول

وأين الثريا من يد المتناول

She said, “I am distant as the Pleiades—

Then it said, "I am distant, like the Pleiades—

And how far the Pleiades are from the hand that reaches!”

and how far the Pleiades are from the hand that reaches!"
