After your departure, strength and good fortune deserted me.

Nor did horses and Bactrian camels avail me in your absence.

And weeping consumed my sleep and effaced my paths,

so neither slumber nor a path brings you near me.

And beside me dwelt a reproacher, O mistress of beauty,

bellowing like a bull worn down by ploughing.

So my eye came to resemble a ship,

with a hole on every side pouring forth water,

over a night whose moons shone upon us

by the Nile, O Layla, with waterweed in its waters.

My tears flow, not over wealth that was spent

and driven far from my palm by sheer generosity.
