After turning away, she favored us with a brief visit.

So I took her visit for a jumble of dreams.

A Syrian woman—her coquettish eye wrought

In Egypt the deeds of lions upon gazelles.

She nearly embraced me, while tears were drowning me,

And the caravan was busy saddling and bridling.

But modesty held her back; pearls took shelter in it,

Both revealed by a moon adorned with stars.

Her splendor unhidden from a talebearer's eye.

With my hair behind me and fortune's shade before me.

Generous Salma banished my grief with a downpour of bounty.

So I left her, saying: all goodness lies in

The sons of Masdiyya, the generous Syrian chief.

So it is no wonder that its largest share fell to

Salma, their metropolitan's sister, possessed of perfect piety.

Wife of that ocean of generosity, whose bounty is freely given,

Salim Bulad, the most pious of all great lords.

Of Syrian lineage, honored, benevolent, and exalted.

His bounty embraced widows with kindness,

As fragrance pervades the flourishing blossoms of the hills.

And he built up the great churches and established their

Endowments to aid children and orphans.

How noble he is, illustrious through both grandfathers, surrounded by

The glory of both sides—maternal and paternal uncles.

Take pride, O Salim, in the lofty resolves you were granted,

Like mountains, and in forbearance and courage.

And stay safe, for your heart generously gave you its name,

When it became sound, free from all pain.
