    You are still smiling... you

are now, like me, in captivity.

    Wherever you looked, you dashed

your gaze against the wall, a handspan away.

Listen to my poetry; it tells

you how I left my home!

    How your nightingale was roused,

ever playful, in the nightingale’s nest!

How they flung themselves, twenty strong, against

the door, until my neighbor took fright!

And my little “refuge” was encircled

by those who remained, like a bracelet.

And they scattered through the house,

    devouring it like sparks.

They scatter my library, along with my collected poems,

and my little sheets of paper!

And they search, and crack jokes,

    and they eye me askance!

    What flying “fortresses”

have entrenched themselves behind the curtain?!

    What heavy “equipment”

is there, I wonder, in the canary’s nest?!

    And Maʿn turned his face,

angry, roused to defend his pride.

Why do the “guests” not share with him

    his merriment, as grown-ups do?!

He gazes at us: neither their solemnity

    did he like, nor mine.

And I stood watching; unwilling was

my poetry to open a line of fire!

    And my wandering rhymes refused

    to contemplate any vengeance!

Had I wished, the verse would have erupted,

    thundering—what an explosion!

Far be it! For my roof shall shelter nothing

    but chivalry and noble lineage.

In his home, the noble man yields

    to every calamity or loss.
