Am I, in the harbor, a wave and a sail,

that recount history as a plaintive melody,

pouring ancient enchantment forth as majesty

    and beauty that defies annihilation?

I am in the harbor; from here my Sinbad

wove the wind and rode eternity.

From here the oars once fluttered,

and we bore Arab love to the world.

The ancient fragrance is still around me,

in my blood, filling my brow, in my hands.

The past grows dark for others, yet remains

a body in which I continue, whole.

I am a pulse watered by a pulse from the

past, pouring song into my lips.

I have not turned to stone; whatever rained down upon me

in the form of graves does not belong to me.

All that broke me and disfigured my soul

was an intrusion upon me in my fall.

I am, in the harbor, a wave that chews on orphanhood

and weeps over the iron in my feet.

If I stirred from my tomb, I would give

the earth a delicious cup it has never sipped.

    سأمضي في حُرْقَةِ الصيفِ رِيّا

    If I stirred, I would not fight with illusion;

I shall go on through summer's burning heat, my thirst quenched.

O my ancient fragrance, O my Sinbad,

O my sail that folds the heavens, fold upon fold.

Is it a fantasy to reclaim my breath?

To move the rocks off my lungs?

Death mocked the gleam of my resurrection,

    sealing my eyes with darkness.

Death mocked my ashes, and from them—

the killers know—I am raised alive.
