We thought the air devoid of anyone to answer—

a gifted prosodist of al-Khalil’s school.

فقمنا ندعي في الشعر حظا

حسبنا انه سبك الاريب

حسبنا انه سبك الاريب

So we rose to claim a share in poetry,

thinking it the crafting of a skillful poet.

ولم نعلم بأن في الزوايا

خبايا أيدت حزب الحسيب

خبايا أيدت حزب الحسيب

And we did not know that in the corners

lay secrets that supported the noble man’s side.

فحكمنا وسلمنا اعترافا

فحكمنا وسلمنا اعترافا

بأن الحكم ماض من أديب

بأن الحكم ماض من أديب

So we gave judgment and yielded, acknowledging

that a man of letters’ judgment is binding.

رضينا والرضا فرض علينا

إذا ما جيء باللحم العجيب

إذا ما جيء باللحم العجيب

We accepted—and acceptance is our duty—

whenever the marvelous meat is brought.

أصبت الفصل لما ان نسينا

سعيداً وهو أولى بالنصيب

You reached the right verdict when we forgot

Sa‘id, who was more entitled to the share.

فبنداوٌ مباركة فاما

So Bandaw is blessed; let it be either

there or elsewhere, before long.

And hasten; do not put us off, for a kindness

we hasten to receive is medicine from a physician.
