From my pulpit, I offer greetings to the gathering.

And spread sayings that rose from the yellowness of awareness [wording unclear].

And address the peoples; you know that I have

allusions, and some speech is more like blows.

We took steps—may God never decree their return.

Otherwise, the sweetest thing is death upon a leather execution mat.

We took steps in which humiliation settled

upon us, so the free man's eyes overflowed with tears.

Who, then, will stand for humankind and faith, O people? Has there drawn near

the time to embrace justice, or has it been pronounced dead?

When will things be set right—oh, when, I wonder,

will the echo of the upright, monotheistic faith be sweet to the ear?

When will the Lord champion the banner of the people who

amid humiliation, have come to clutch the burning coal of sacred law?

When will the noble people rise to set right

the wrongs of peoples who have colluded in severance?

When will the beloved homeland stride in splendor,

trailing the hems of pride, free by nature?

When will the breeze of lofty aspirations blow,

and revive souls that have vanished from the homestead?

When, and when? Is it destined that we shall see

a crescent with a star, and nothing else, upon the fortresses?

When will the days allow the unveiling of

bliss, and the land grow pure as milk in the udder?

When is the appointed time for departure, now that the pilgrimage has passed,

my friend? Otherwise, there is no inclination toward death.

Then alas, if life is prolonged, and there bends

the people's rod toward the free, warning of blows!

Impossible—yet possible, should a decree take effect—

is the shifting of the pole and the watched-over celestial sphere.

Say yes; do not deem it too hard, and entrust matters

to the Creator of Egypt, the source of harm and benefit.

Be steadfast, leave worry aside, and remember the saying of those

men gone before who pinpointed the site of the breach:

Ah, is there a youth to polish away its rust—ah, ah—

with earnestness, resolve, and seizing chances to reach the heights,

to rouse the fettered and gladden the maimed?

Peace, peace—no bliss and no serenity.

Farewell, farewell to the dwellings and to sacred law.
