An agreement made at night is dissolved; so do not

act on a statement that passed through the darkness.

وعليه لا تحكم بخلف الوعدان

Accordingly, do not judge the promise broken if

we do not come at night, face turned toward you.

خلق النهار لكسبنا ولديننا

والليل قل سكن فتم مستقبلا

Daytime was created for our livelihood and our religion;

and night, say, is repose; so remain, welcoming it.

لا يشغل المشغول ان شغل بدا

والاجتماع به الزمان تكفلا

والاجتماع به الزمان تكفلا

Let no one already occupied be disturbed when work arises;

time has undertaken to bring about the meeting.

أما الطعام فكل لنفسك ما تشا

من حكمة صدرت بعصر قد خلا

من حكمة صدرت بعصر قد خلا

“As for food, eat for yourself whatever you wish”—

a piece of wisdom uttered in an age gone by.

فاعمل بها واعذر خليلا عاقه

فاعمل بها واعذر خليلا عاقه

عن وصلكم في الليل عذر قد جلا

عن وصلكم في الليل عذر قد جلا

So act upon it, and excuse a friend held back

from joining you at night by an excuse now clear.
