Beguile those who have readied themselves to meet you,

O abode of those who find your expanse sweet,

those sowing their poisons along the road,

    those wounding roses with thorns.

Why is it, when I say “Peace,” that their birds

are overhead, my bewilderment goading them?!

Through their decayed remains, my awareness went a step beyond,

then scattered dust upon the brink of your visions.

    Pride has clouds frequented

by those swimming at the summit of the celestial spheres.

And the bonds of self-abasement are fragile, and its slaves

scramble for the echo that feigns tears.

The prisoner lived by his reason, wholly devoted,

when the pretender to cleverness tyrannized over his time.

Indeed, he was thrust, a free man, into the dark depths of his error—

he who was not convicted in the case of awareness!
