who has settled there after them,

and why the inhabitants departed from

a home they had lived in, in haste.

and mourn the dwelling and speak to its ruins.

Leave me be, friend; spare me your reproach.

My heart has defied whoever reproached it.

Do not burden it beyond what it has suffered,

for my heart holds a care that has engrossed it.

I do not forget the hour of parting, when

    the beloved roused his camel.

He left in my heart, as he bade me farewell,

a fire of longing that has never ceased to burn.

He denied union to his lover,

so he knows that he has killed him.

O tormented heart, is this how

you seek love, yet long to tire of it?
