قُلsay لِأَصحابٍto companions رأَونيthey saw me مَيتاdead
فَبَكونيso they wept for me إِذwhen رأونيthey saw me حزناin sorrow
Say to companions who saw me dead,
Tell my friends who saw me dead,
And wept for me in sorrow when they saw me:
And wept for me in sorrow,
لاdo not تَظُنّونيsuppose me بِأَنّيthat I am مَيّتٌdead
لَيسَis not ذاthis المَيتthe dead one وَاللَهby God أَناI
Do not suppose that I am dead;
Think not that I am dead,
This dead one, by God, is not I.
Nay, by God, I live tomorrow!
أَناI عصفورٌa sparrow وَهَذاand this قَفَصيmy cage
طِرتI flew مِنهُfrom it فَتَخلىso it became empty رَهناheld in pledge
I am a sparrow, and this is my cage.
I'm a bird, this was my cage,
I flew from it, so it stood empty, held in pledge.
I have flown and left it vacant,
وَأَناand I اليومَtoday أُناجيI commune with مَلأan assembly
وَأَرىand I see اللَهGod عَياناًdirectly بِهناin bliss
And today I commune with an assembly,
Now I converse face to face
And I see God directly, in bliss.
With God, and see Him plain.
فَاِخلَعواso strip away الأَنفُسthe souls عَنfrom أَجسادِهاtheir bodies
لِترونَso that you may see الحَقّthe Truth حَقّاًtruly بَيّناclearly
So strip the souls from their bodies,
Cast off the flesh and free the soul
So that you may see the Truth truly and clearly.
To see the Truth unveiled,
لاdo not تَرعكُمfrighten you سَكرةthe stupor المَوتِof death فَماfor … not
هِيَit إِلّاexcept اِنتِقالٌa passage مِنfrom هُناhere
Let not death's stupor frighten you, for
Let not death's dream appall your mind -
It is only a passage from here.
It is no more than one world hailed.
عُنصرُthe essence الأَرواحِof the souls فيناwithin us واحدٌone
وَكَذاand likewise الأَجسامُthe bodies جِسمa body عَمَّناhas encompassed us
The essence of the souls within us is one,
The spirit's elements in us unite,
And likewise, the bodies are one body encompassing us.
As all flesh is like one man;
ماnot أَرىI see نَفسيmyself إِلّاexcept أَنتُمyou
وَاِعتِقاديand my belief أَنَّكُمthat you أَنتُمyou yourselves أَناI
I see myself as none other than you,
In you I live, in you I fight,
And my belief is that you yourselves are me.
You are myself, and I am you.
فَمَتىso when ماever كانَit is خَيراًgood فَلَناthen for us
وَمَتىand whenever كانَit is شَرّاًevil فَبِناthen through us
So whenever there is good, it is for us,
When good - for us, when ill - by us,
And whenever there is evil, it is through us.
Have mercy! On yourselves have pity!
فَاِرحَمونيso have mercy on me تَرحمواyou will have mercy on أَنفسَكُمyourselves
وَاِعلَمواand know أَنَّكُمthat you فيin إِثرِناour wake
So have mercy on me, and you will have mercy on yourselves,
Consider that we follow thus,
And know that you follow in our wake.
And this life runs to God's own city.
مَنwhoever رآنيsaw me فَليقوّthen let him strengthen نَفسهُhimself
إِنَّماonly الدُنياthe world عَلىupon قرنthe horn الفَناof annihilation
Whoever sees me, let him strengthen himself:
See me and strengthen for the strife
This world is but poised on annihilation's horn.
This world that is no more than fled -
وَعَلَيكُمand upon you مِنfrom كَلاميmy words جملةٌa summation
فَسلامُso the peace اللَهِof God مَدحٌpraise وَثَناand acclaim
And for you, a summation of my words:
To sum my words: Praise God for life,
Thus God's peace is praise and acclaim.
And peace be with the holy dead!
