قَدindeed كنتُI was أَحذَرI fear أَنthat أَشقىI suffer misery بِفُرقَتِكمthrough parting from you
قَد كنتُ أَحذَر أَن أَشقى بِفُرقَتِكم
فَقَدso indeed شَقيتُI suffered misery بِهاthrough it لَمnot (past negation) يَنفَعِavail الحَذَرِcaution
فَقَد شَقيتُ بِها لَم يَنفَعِ الحَذَرِ
I had feared that parting from you would bring me misery.
I feared that parting with you would make me miserable
And indeed I have suffered through it; caution was of no avail.
Yet I have become so; my fear availed me naught

وَدونَ ذَلِكَ مَخبوء لَهُ القَدرُ
Each day a man hopes for his tomorrow,
A man lives every day hoping for the morrow
Yet before that, fate lies hidden for him.
Yet fate lies hidden beyond that

وَالمَغشي يَلهو وَفي الأَيّامِ مُعتبرُ
The heart hopes, yet hopes are deceitful,
The heart is hopeful but hopes are mendacious
And the veiled one makes merry, while the days hold a lesson.
Time plays tricks while the days pass by instructively
