Forever the souls yearn for you.
The souls always yearn for you,
And union with you is their sweet basil and wine.
And being with you is their comfort and rest.

The hearts of those who love you long for you,

And find solace in your sweet company.
وَاah! رَحمةًmercy للعاشِقينَfor the lovers تَكلّفواthey took upon themselves
سرّthe secret of المَحبّةِlove وَالهَوىand passion فَضّاحُa revealer of secrets
Ah, mercy for the lovers who have taken upon themselves
Have mercy on the lovers - do not reveal
The secret of love, while passion exposes all.
The secrets of love and passion, o loose-tongued one!
بِالسرِّabout the secret إِنif باحواthey divulge تُباحُis made lawful to shed دِماؤُهمtheir blood
وَكَذاand thus دِماءُthe blood of العاشِقينَthe lovers تُباحُis made lawful to shed
If they divulge the secret, their blood is lawful to shed;
If they divulge the secret, their blood becomes lawful,
And thus the blood of lovers is made lawful.
Thus the blood of lovers is made lawful.

And if they conceal it, their tale is told
And if they keep it hidden, the tale-carrying spy
Before the talebearers by the eye that pours out tears.
Sheds crocodile tears before the jealous ones.
أَحبابناour beloveds ماذاwhat الَّذيthat which أَفسدتمُyou ruined
بِجفائكمthrough your coldness غَيرother than الفَسادِcorruption صَلاحُsoundness
Our beloveds, what is it you have ruined
O beloved ones, what corruption have you caused
By your coldness? What is not corruption is soundness.
Other than good, by your aloofness?
خَفضَhe lowered الجَناحthe wing لَكُمfor you وَلَيسَand not عَلَيكُمover you

لِلصَبّfor the lovesick one فيin خَفضِlowering الجَناحthe wing جُناحُblame
He lowered his wing for you, not over you;
He has folded his wings for you - no need to fold yours -
The lovesick one bears no blame in lowering his wing.
No shame in lowering one's wing.
وَبَدَتand appeared شَواهِدُsigns للسّقامِof sickness عَلَيهمُupon them
فيهاin them لِمُشكلfor the obscurity of أمّهمtheir intent إِيضاحُclarification
And signs of sickness appeared upon them,
And signs of their illness have appeared in them
In which their obscure intent is made plain.
Making clear the troubles of their mothers.
فَإِلىso toward لِقاكمmeeting you نَفسهُhis soul مُرتاحةٌat ease

So his soul finds rest in meeting you,
Their souls find rest in seeing you
And his gaze strains eagerly toward your favor.
And their eyes aspire to please you.
عودواreturn بِنورِwith the light of الوَصلِunion مِنfrom غَسَقthe deep gloom of الدُّجىnight
فَالهَجرُfor separation لَيلٌis night وَالوصالُand union صَباحُis morning
Return with the light of union from the deep gloom of night;
Return with the light of union from the gloom of separation
For separation is night, and union is morning.
For estrangement is night and reunion is dawn.
صافاهُمُhe showed them pure affection فَصَفواso they were sincere لَهُtoward him فَقُلوبهمthus their hearts
فيin نُورِهاtheir light المِشكاةُthe lamp niche وَالمِصباحُand the lamp
He showed them pure affection, and they were sincere toward him; thus their hearts
They purified themselves, so their hearts are pure,
In their radiance are the niche and the lamp.
The lantern and lamp shine in their light.
وَتَمَتّعواand take delight فَالوَقتُfor the time طابَbecame sweet لِقُربِكُمthrough your nearness

راقَgrew clear الشّرابthe drink وَرَقّتِand grew delicate الأَقداحُthe goblets
And take delight, for the time is sweet through your nearness;
Rejoice while time is pleasant in your company -
The drink has grown clear, and the goblets delicate.
The wine is fine and the cups glitter.
ياO صاحِfriend لَيسَthere is no عَلىupon المُحبِّthe lover مَلامَةٌblame
إِنif لاحَappears فيon أُفقthe horizon of الوِصالِunion صَباحُdawn
O friend, no blame lies upon the lover
O companion! No blame lies with the lover
If dawn appears on the horizon of union.
If the dawn of reunion appears on the horizon.
لاno ذَنبَguilt لِلعُشّاقِfor the lovers إِنif غَلَبَovercomes الهَوىpassion
كِتمانَهُمtheir concealment فَنماso grew الغَرامُardent love فَباحواso they spoke openly
Lovers bear no guilt if passion overcomes
No fault lies with lovers if passion prevails -
Their concealment, and ardor grows, and they speak openly.
Their secret grew as they concealed it, so they divulged it.
سَمَحواthey gave freely بِأَنفُسِهمof their souls وَماand did not بَخِلواbegrudge بِهاthem
لَمّاwhen دَرواthey learned أَنّthat السَّماحgenerosity رَباحُis gain
They gave their souls freely and did not begrudge them,
They were generous with themselves, not miserly,
When they learned that generosity brings gain.
For they knew generosity to be profitable.
وَدعاهُمُand called them داعيthe caller of الحَقائقِtruths دَعوةa summons
فَغَدواso they set out at morning بِهاthrough it مُستَأنسينgladdened وَراحواand returned at evening
And the caller of truths called them with a summons,
The voice of truth called them with an invitation,
So they went forth at morn, gladdened by it, and returned at dusk.
So they came willingly and at ease.
رَكِبواthey embarked عَلىupon سنَنِthe course of الوَفاfidelity وَدُموعهُمand their tears
بَحرٌa sea وَشِدّةand the intensity of شَوقهمtheir longing مَلّاحُa boatman
They embarked on the course of fidelity, their tears
They embarked upon the ways of loyalty, their tears
A sea, and the force of their longing a boatman.
An ocean and their intense longing the sail.
وَاللَّهِby God ماnot طَلَبواthey sought الوُقوفَstanding بِبابِهِat his door
حَتّىuntil دعواthey were summoned فَأَتاهُمthen came to them المفتاحُthe key
By God, they did not seek to stand at his door
By God! They did not seek to stand at his door
Until they were summoned; then the key came to them.
Until the key came to them and opened it.
لاnot يَطربونَthey rejoice بِغَيرِin anything other than ذِكرremembrance of حَبيبِهمtheir beloved
أَبَداًever فَكُلُّso all زَمانِهمtheir time أَفراحُis joy
They delight in nothing but remembrance of their beloved,
They are never delighted but by remembrance of their beloved -
Ever; so all their time is joy.
Every moment of theirs is joyful.
حَضَرواthey were present وَقَدand already غابَتhad vanished شَواهِدُthe signs of ذاتِهمtheir own selves
فَتَهَتّكواso they cast off restraint لَمّاwhen رَأوهthey saw him وَصاحواand cried out
They were present, though the signs of their own selves had vanished;
They came while signs of their selves had disappeared,
Then they cast off restraint when they saw him and cried out.
They shrieked when they saw him and were annihilated.
أَفناهُمhe annihilated them عَنهُمfrom themselves وَقَدand already كشفَتwere lifted لَهُمfor them
حجبُthe veils of البقاabiding فَتَلاشتِthen dissolved الأَرواحُthe souls
He effaced them from themselves, and for them were lifted
He made them oblivious of themselves when the veils
The veils of abiding; then the souls dissolved.
Of permanence were lifted from them and the souls evaporated.
فَتَشَبّهواso emulate إِنif لَمnot تَكُونواyou are مِثلَهُمlike them
إِنَّindeed التَّشَبّهemulation بِالكِرامِof the noble فَلاحُis success
So emulate them if you are not like them;
Imitate them if you are not like them -
For emulating the noble brings success.
Imitating the noble ones is success.

Rise, O drinking companion, to the wine, and bring it;
Arise, o cupbearer, and bring it here -
In its cup the goblets have gone round.
In its cup the drinks have circulated.

لاnot خَمرَةwine قَدalready داسَهاhas trodden it الفَلّاحُthe farmer
From a vineyard of vineyards, in a cask of piety,
It is the old wine of love and the goal
Not wine that the farmer has trodden.
Of the boon companion - so excellent is that rest!
هيَit is خَمرةُthe wine of الحُبِّlove القَديمِancient وَمُنتَهىand the utmost

غَرضdesire of النَديمthe drinking companion فَنعمand excellent is ذاكَthat الراحُwine
It is the wine of ancient love, and the utmost
Thus did Noah in the ark become intoxicated,
Desire of the drinking companion—how fine that wine is!
And he fluted and lamented because of it.
وَكَذاكَand likewise نوحٌNoah فيin السَّفينةthe ship أَسكَرَتit intoxicated

وَلَهُand he had بِذَلِكَbecause of that رَنَّةًa ringing cry وَنِياحُand lamentation
And likewise it intoxicated Noah in the ship,
The souls streamed to His kingdom,
And at that he gave a ringing cry and a lament.
And find no rest but in meeting Him.
وَصَبَتand yearned إِلىtoward مَلَكوتِهِhis dominion الأَرواحُthe souls

And the souls yearned toward his dominion,
Their bodies and hearts are as though
And he finds no rest in meeting anyone but him.
The lantern and lamp shine in their light.
وَكَأَنَّماand as though أَجسامهُمtheir bodies وَقُلوبهُمand their hearts

And it is as though their bodies and their hearts
The blood of one who reveals their beloved among them
In its radiance were the niche and the lamp.
Is made lawful for the swords.
مَنwhoever باحَspeaks openly بَينَهُمamong them بِذِكرِwith mention of حَبيبِهِhis beloved

Whoever speaks openly among them of his beloved,
His blood is lawful for swords, permitted to be shed.
