    Select speech from the noble; you will recognize it.

    Its purest is sweeter than honey to the connoisseur.

    You play eloquence's magic by scattering letters.

    You cast it forth as pearls; its meaning is beauty's secret.

    بِـالرُوحِ حِبْرٌ عَـلَى الألْوَاحِ أَجْـرَاهُ

    This discourse—its sharpener is at the pens;

    through the soul, he set ink flowing upon the tablets.

    Its birth is a difficult beginning, and its outset

    exhausted him amid the turmoil of shaping the expression.

    After the tight crowding of sound within images,

    his right hand freed the flock from captivity's bonds.

    So the free one swims through the expanses, unrestrained,

    spurning the fetters whose sight wearies him.

    And the heart, seeking refuge, drew inspiration from the mind's counsel.

    So the rain streamed freely, moist, its dewiest drops pouring down.

    The heart's solace keeps pace with the soul in an outpouring,

    until it reached its utmost, like a river overflowing its channel.

    Beautify thought with it; tame what he imagined.

    Planting gardens and plucking flowers enchanted him.

    تَـرْقَى بِهَـا حِصْنَ آَفَــاقٍ لِــمَبْنَـاهُ

    And spin from the sun the light of letters into lessons;

    through them you scale a citadel of horizons to build it.

    From concise speech comes exhortation, lightened by skill,

    easy to follow; its import has softened what was hard.

    Send it forth through dawn's inhalation, from a breath

    that added an exhalation to life; its purest wafted forth.

    Indeed, when the tongue's faults have died,

    speech ranks with the most precious gold nuggets.

    فِي كُلِّ طَبْعٍ طَغَى ، نُـضْـجًـا بِفَحْــوَاهُ

    And the original is truer than artifice you embellish;

    in every natural disposition, its substance overflows with ripeness.

    The best speech, when its jewels are fashioned,

    is cast toward a sea; sparing expenditure anchors it.

    He offered speech when it conveyed meaning, abridging

    all repetition; and the essence of understanding sufficed him.

    عِنْـدَ الإشَـارَةِ يُجْــلِي القِشْرَ مَـــعْــنـاهُ

    Indeed, the discerning one grasps a glimmer of intent;

    at a hint, its meaning clears away the husk.
