With a miser I spent the night within his home,

as though I had spent the night in one of the tombs.

He hosted me, though he surpassed everyone I knew

in wealth, yet lived the life of the penniless,

with the meat of a she-goat, worn out like an old waterskin,

lately acquainted with hardship and misery.

Her bones, in their dryness, seemed like wood

packed into a sack, so wasted was her skin.

And a black, empty khushkananja pastry,

as though it were a piece of a buffalo's horn,

ancient, from the remnants of a mother's back,

that had lived in his shelter for the lifetime of Iblis.

So I spent the worst of nights in the courtyards of his dwell-

ings, and made there the worst of overnight halts.
